Eyewear for enhancing the contrast sensitivity of the human vision system through the use of lenses subdivided in areas of different light filtration properties arranged in specialized patterns, called multi-filters patterns, are provided. Of the multiple filtration areas, or filters, that compose each multi-filters patterns, one or more filters heavily reduces or totally block light arriving from some areas of the visual field of the eyes, while other filters lightly reduce or totally allow light from other areas of the same visual field. The resulting effect is to drive the auto-exposure function of the eye-brain vision system to adapt itself to areas of interest of the visual field thus improving contrast sensitivity and vision acuity in those areas while reducing or blocking light and glare from the rest of the visual field. The 'multi-filters pattern' technology of the present invention can be implemented in lenses of stand-alone eyewear or as attachable 'clip-on' lenses, to provide vision acuity improvement to stand-alone eyewear.

Apparatus for improving vision acuity in points of interest of the visual field

A low cost camera by implementing the major functions in host software is provided. This is accomplished by sending raw, digitized data from the camera directly to the host. The increased volume of raw data is handled by either an improved compression/decompression scheme using lossless compression, using lossy compression or using a shared bus with higher bandwidth. By moving such functions as color processing and scaling to the host, the pixel correction can also be moved to the host. This in turn allows the elimination of the frame buffer memory from the camera. Finally, the camera can use a low cost lens by implementing vignetting, distortion, gamma or aliasing correction with a correction value stored in a register of the camera for later access by the host to perform corrections.

A calibration system activates all or a majority of a display with the same value, such as with the same color. The camera is pointed at the display, but doesn't have to precisely pick up the whole display. The computer compares the pixel information received in the camera photosensor, and can store an appropriate correction factor. Not only does the user not have to precisely position the camera, jitter due to use hand movement is not a problem since this smoothes out the color information from the various pixels on the display, and actually improves the calibration. A target can be provided on the display to indicate if the user is properly pointing the camera at the display.

A method and apparatus for transmitting image data over a packet-based bus. The invention essentially supports multiple pipes within a single packet, thus utilizing a single set of pipe interface hardware. Each of the pipes within a packet has it's own header, and any particular packet can have 0, 1, 2 or more headers.

New and improved methods and apparatus for transmitting data over a data bus. The invention provides a bus system including an external shared bus, an external bus interface, and a resource bus. The external bus interface can be configured to move data between the external shared bus and the resource bus. The bus system can also include a data processing pipeline coupled to the resource bus. The data processing pipeline can include a plurality of components for processing data. Some of the data processing components can be coupled to the resource bus.

Resource bus interface

A scanner powered by the limited power available on a peripheral bus. In particular, the scanner can operate within the 2.2 watts provided over a USB connector. The scanner of the present invention uses a contact image sensor (CIS) which uses optics to distribute light from each light emitter to multiple pixel positions, preferably using a single LED for each color. An electric motor for driving the platen uses rare earth magnets to limit the power required. Instead of the traditional method of biasing the CIS scanner against the platen with a spring, the platen itself is spring-biased. The moveable spring biasing of a platen is possible because a worm drive motor is used allowing a helical thread on the worm drive to contact the platen gears as they move up and down as biased. Preferably, the helical thread of the worm gear has a single point of contact with a gear on the platen, further limiting the friction and allowing the platen to move up and down with respect to the stationary motor. Varied duty cycle digital pulses are used directly to drive the motor. Only the most significant bits are used to limit the amount of circuitry needed to calculate the speed. The digital controller circuit also operates on a 3.3 volt power supply. The platen itself is preferably made of a hard material to limit the footprint of the platen, and a small diameter platen is used.
