A method of producing light alloy castings by foundry technology in which, after solidification and shake-out, the casting is subjected to a heat-treatment cycle comprising a solution heat-treatment step at a temperature high enough to put into solution the phases precipitated in the course of the solidification of the casting, possibly followed by a quenching step and an ageing step, wherein the solution heat-treatment step is performed at least partially in hot isostatic pressing conditions.

A mould structure for producing metal castings by solidifying molten metal, in particular for producing a light-alloy engine crank-case, which includes a plurality of cores defining a mould cavity and a primary inlet aperture for feeding the molten metal into the bottom region of the mould cavity through the walls of one of the said cores, which includes: a metal containment structure, open at the top, with a bottom wall and side walls having a plurality of reference elements which have surface portions which complement surface portions of the said cores, the said cores being assembled inside the containment structure so that they are engaged with each other and with the said reference elements, and being shaped so as to define interstices between their surfaces facing outwardly of the mould cavity and the walls of the containment structure; and at least one cover element made of a highly heat-conductive material, supported by the side walls of the containment structure and by some of the said cores and serving to close the top of the mould cavity.

Apparatus and methods of die casting which reduce waste, by providing heated channels to feed solidification shrinkage. The channels are heated to a temperature which prevents solidification in the channels, thus allowing the channels to be substantially smaller than conventional risers. An insulating layer in the mold prevents excessive heat loss from the channels to the mold cavity area.

Die casting process

Engine block cylinder liners are formed from high melting temperature aluminum alloy composites. A cast composite is first formed from a high melting temperature aluminum alloy, e.g. Al-Mn, Al-Cr, Al-Ni, Al-Fe or Al-Cr-Zr, and refractory particles, e.g. alumina. This composite is then extruded into a tubular sleeve. If desired, a long tube may be extruded which is then cut into desired lengths. These new cylinder liners have the following desirable properties: high melting temperature, good strength at the service temperature, higher thermal conductivity than cast iron, good wear resistance and good corrosion resistance.
