A coating composition comprises a first copolymer and a second copolymer. The first copolymer has at least one linear polymer strand having a weight average molecular weight of at least 1,500 Daltons and functionality X with an equivalent weight of no more than 500. The second copolymer has at least one linear polymer strand having a weight average molecular weight of at least 1,500 Daltons and functionality X' with an equivalent weight of no more than 1,500. The coating composition is free of gloss flattening agents, yet still produces a cured film having a low gloss of less than 70 gloss units at an angle of incidence of 60&#xb0;, as measured according to ASTM D 2457.

Pigment dispersant, method of making coating compositions, and coating compositions

A method for providing cured coating films free of popping defects. The method requires the application to a substrate of at least 2.0 mils/50.8 microns of a uncured curable coating composition comprising an anti-popping component (a), a film-forming component (b), and a crosslinking component (c), wherein anti-popping component (a) has from 12 to 72 carbon atoms, is substantially free of any heteroatoms, is not a crystalline solid at room temperature and comprises a mixture of two or more structures selected from the group consisting of aliphatic structures for anti-popping component (a), aromatic-containing structures for anti-popping component (a), cycloaliphatic-containing structures for anti-popping component (a), and mixtures thereof, at least one of the two or more structures being a cycloaliphatic-containing structure or an aromatic-containing structure. The coated uncured substrate is cured to provide a cured film free of popping defects with an average film build of at least 2.0 mils/50.8 microns.

Method of providing cured coating films free of popping defects

The invention provides curable waterborne coating compositions comprising an aqueous dispersion (A) comprising an organic binder component (A1) comprising at least 5% by weight of a reactive component (a), based on the total weight of organic binder component (A1), and at least one crosslinking component (B). The reactive component (a) is substantially free of any heteratoms and is a not a crystalline solid at room temperature and comprises from (i) 12 to 72 carbon atoms, and (ii) at least two functional groups. The curable waterborne coating compositions of the invention show significantly improved pop resistance while also providing improved chip resistance, weathering resistance, flexibility, and/or scratch & mar resistance.

A basecoat composition includes an acrylic polymer prepared from a combination of monomers including at least about 30% by weight ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, or a combination of these. The basecoat composition also includes methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin and up to about 10% by weight of a butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, based on the weight of the basecoat composition vehicle and butylated melamine resin. An at least partially cured layer of the basecoat composition offers improved adhesion with a coating composition layer applied over it and cured, whether the coating composition layer applied over it is another layer of the basecoat composition itself or a layer of a clearcoat composition.

Basecoat composition with improved repair properties

The coating composition of the invention includes a polymer, especially an acrylic polymer, having hydroxyl and/or primary carbamate functionality; a water-miscible organic solvent; a low hydrogen bonding oxygenated solvent; and water that is emulsified in the organic phase. The coating composition of the invention may be a clearcoat coating composition, preferably an automotive clearcoat coating composition. The invention further provides an article, such as an automotive vehicle, having a surface coated with a coating derived from the coating composition of the invention, particularly a composite coating having a basecoat layer and a clearcoat layer, and a method of producing such a coating on a substrate, particularly as a basecoat/clearcoat composite coating, with the coating composition of the invention preferably being at least the clearcoat of the composite coating. The coating composition of the invention provides especially low volatile organic content, with significant reductions of 25% or more from comparable previous coating compositions.

Coating composition having low volatile organic content

The invention provides curable coating compositions comprising an aqueous dispersion comprising a stabilizing resin (P1) and a compound (P2) comprising functional groups reactable with a crosslinking agent. Compound (P2) is dispersed into stabilizing resin (P1). The coating compositions of the invention may further comprise an optional crosslinking agent (P3) which may or may not be dispersed into stabilizing resin (P1). In a particularly preferred embodiment, both the stabilizing resin (P1) and compound (P2) will comprise functional groups which are carbamate or are convertible to carbamate.

Aqueous dispersions for coating compositions

The present invention provides a coating composition containing a two-stage polymer emulsion. The two-stage emulsion polymer contains composite polymeric particles of a first stage polymer prepared from about 0.25% to about 5% by weight monomer having at least two polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups, about 2.5% to about 10% by weight hydroxyl monomer, preferably at least about 50% by weight of non-functional monomer of hydrophobic monomer, and preferably without addition of any acid-functional monomer; and a second stage polymer having a theoretical glass transition temperature of at least about 50&deg; C. prepared using, by weight, about 25% to about 50% by weight hydroxyl monomer, about 3% to about 9% carboxylic acid monomer, and preferably at least 25% by weight of non-functional monomer of hydrophobic monomer;. The composite polymeric particles have a theoretical glass transition temperature of not more than about 30&deg; C., preferably not more than about 0&deg; C., and include from about 0.8% to about 2% by weight of carboxylic acid monomer.

Curable coating composition with improved stability

Water-dilutable polyurethane/acrylic copolymers which may be either completely nonionically stabilized or partically nonionically and partically anionically stabilized comprise the reaction product of an ethylenically terminated polyurethane macromonomer containing poly(oxyalklyene) segments and one or more ethylencially unsaturated monomers selected from acrylic acid, methacruylic acid, fumaric acid, styrene, vintyltoluene, and alkyl and hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, and furamic acids. The copolymers are useful as principal resins and as pigment grind resins in water-borne automotive base coat paint formulations.

Nonionically and partially anionically stabilized water-dispersible

Laterally stabilized, water-miscible polyester polyurethane resins, useful as principal binder resins and as pigment grind resins in water-borne coating systems are the reaction product of one or more polyols, one or more polyisocyanates, and a polyester prepolymer formed by the reaction of a polyether alcohol, one or more polyols, and one or more polyfunctional carboxylic acids. The resins have a polyester polyurethane backbone with pendant polyether groups, attached to the polyester segments of the backbone, which serves to solubilize and stabilize the resins in aqueous media. The resins have small dispersion particle size at the same or higher molecular weights than similar prior art resins, and produce better metal flake orientation when used as the principal resins in base coat formulations which contain aluminum and mica particulates for 'metallic' effect coating finishes.
