During operation, an electronic device may capture images using multiple image sensors having different fields of view and positions. Then, the electronic device may determine, based at least in part on an apparent size of an anatomical feature in the images (such as an interpupillary distance) and a predefined or predetermined size of the anatomical feature, absolute motion of at least a portion of the individual along a direction between at least the portion of the individual and the electronic device. Moreover, the electronic device may compute based at least in part on an estimated distance along the direction corresponding to the apparent size and the predefined or predetermined size and angular information associated with one or more objects in the images relative to the positions, absolute motion of at least the portion of the individual in a plane that is perpendicular to the direction.

Glasses-free determination of absolute motion

A computer that determines at least an anatomic feature of a left atrial appendage (LAA) is described. During operation, the computer generates a 3D image associated with an individual's heart. This 3D image may present a view along a perpendicular direction to an opening of the LAA. Then, the computer may receive information specifying a set of reference locations. For example, the set of reference locations may include: a location on a circumflex artery, a location between a superior portion of the LAA and a left pulmonary vein, and/or a location on a superior wall of the LAA and distal to trabeculae carneae. Next, the computer automatically determines, based, at least in part, on the set of reference locations, at least the anatomical feature of the LAA, which is associated with the opening of the LAA and a size of a device used in an LAA closure (LAAC) procedure.

Left-atrial-appendage annotation using 3D images

During an analysis technique, a three-dimensional (3D) image of a portion of an individual is iteratively transformed to facilitate accurate determination of detailed multi-point annotation of an anatomical structure. In particular, for a given marker point, in response to receiving information specifying a two-dimensional (2D) plane having an angular position in the 3D image, the 3D image is translated and rotated from an initial position and orientation so that the 2D plane is presented in an orientation parallel to a reference 2D plane of a display. Then, after annotation information specifying the detailed annotation in the 2D plane of the given marker point is received, the 3D image is translated and rotated back to the initial position and orientation. These operations may be repeated for one or more other marker points.

Multi-point annotation using a haptic plane

During an analysis technique, a three-dimensional (3D) image of a portion of an individual is transformed to facilitate accurate determination of detailed annotation of an anatomical structure (such as: specifying the size of the anatomical structure based on annotation markers, an orientation of the anatomical structure, a direction of the anatomical structure and/or a location of the anatomical structure). In particular, in response to receiving information specifying a two-dimensional (2D) plane having an angular position in the 3D image, the 3D image is translated and rotated from an initial position and orientation so that the 2D plane is presented in an orientation parallel to a reference 2D plane of a display. Then, after information specifying the detailed annotation in the 2D plane is received, the 3D image is translated and rotated back to the initial position and orientation.

Image annotation using a haptic plane

A computer system that provides situational awareness and feedback during a surgical procedure is described. During operation, the computer system generates stereoscopic images at a first 3-dimensional (3D) location in an individual, where the stereoscopic images include image parallax and are based on data having a discrete spatial resolution and a predefined surgical plan for the individual. Then, the computer system provides the stereoscopic images to a display. When a surgical tool is advanced, location information of the surgical tool is updated in the stereoscopic images displayed are updated. Alternatively or additionally, When location information indicates a deviation from the predefined surgical plan during the surgical procedure, the computer system generates revised stereoscopic images that indicate: the deviation has occurred an update to the predefined surgical plan and/or how to return to the predefined surgical plan.

Dynamic minimally invasive surgical-aware assistant

A computer system that provides stereoscopic images is described. During operation, the computer system generates the stereoscopic images at a location corresponding to a viewing plane based on data having a discrete spatial resolution, where the stereoscopic images include image parallax. Then, the computer system scales objects depicted in the stereoscopic images so that depth acuity associated with the image parallax is increased, where the scaling is based on the spatial resolution and a viewing geometry associated with a display. For example, the viewing geometry may include a distance from an individual that views the stereoscopic images on the display and the display. Alternatively, the viewing geometry may include a focal point of the individual. Next, the computer system provides the resulting stereoscopic images to the display. In this way, the computer system may optimize the depth acuity for data having discrete sampling.

Graphical system with enhanced stereopsis

A computer system that segments a colon for a computed tomography colonography (CTC) is described. During operation, the computer system accesses imaging data having a spatial resolution. Then, the computer system identifies the colon lumen based on probabilities for different tissue classes in the imaging data. Moreover, the computer system segments the colon into subsegments based on an articulated object model that fits a tortuosity of the colon along a centerline of the colon, where the articulated object model includes values of an orthonormal basis set, curvature and torsion along the centerline, and where boundaries between subsegments are based on the curvature and the torsion. For example, a given boundary between a pair of subsegments may corresponds to or may be related to a minimum value of the curvature and a maximum value of the torsion over a length of the colon.

Enhanced computed-tomography colonography

During an analysis technique, the locations of a polyp candidate (and, more generally, a feature) in images of the colon acquired with different orientations of an individual are compared to determine if the polyp candidate is a true positive (an actual polyp) or a false positive (an artifact). In particular, the locations are compared for images when the individual is supine and prone. During this rotation by approximately 180&#xb0; (and, more generally, a symmetry operation), an actual polyp is expected to also be rotated by approximately 180&#xb0;. Consequently, the location change during the symmetry operation can be used to validate whether the polyp candidate is an actual polyp. Because the colon is a non-rigid object (with degrees of freedom including rotation, compression and expansion), reference markers (such as haustral folds) are used to assist in determining the location of the polyp candidate in the images acquired in the different orientations.
