A method of backfilling a subsurface formation that includes forming a mixture tailings from at least two sources that have particles with different size distributions. The water content of the mixture is varied to control the rheology of the mixture. The mixture is injected through one or more pipes into a target location, such as a subsurface formation.

Systems and methods for injecting a particulate mixture

A calibration standard or check plug provides calibration standards in the permeability range of 10-10,000 nanoDarcy. The check plug is of similar exterior dimensions to a core sample that would be used with existing permeameters. The check plug is constructed from an impermeable material that is insensitive to moisture. The check plug has one or more channels of known diameter from which the permeability may be calculated. Methods for use thereof and methods of manufacture thereof are also disclosed.

Capillary-based calibration standards for measurement of permeability

A waxy oil-external emulsion is provided for injection into a selected zone of a subsurface formation. The selected zone is typically a high permeability zone. The emulsion generally comprises oil, added wax, and water. The emulsion may also include an emulsifying agent and a solvent. The emulsion is formulated to be a liquid at a temperature greater than a targeted temperature in the subsurface formation, but a solid at the targeted temperature. The targeted temperature is typically the maximum operating temperature for the formation. A method of formulating the emulsion is also provided. Further, a method of plugging a high permeability zone using the emulsion is disclosed.

Composition and method for using waxy oil-external emulsions to modify reservoir permeability profiles

Methods for hydrocarbon recovery from a subsurface formation include removing a mixture comprising hydrocarbons and particulate solids from a first formation. At least a portion of the hydrocarbons are separated from the particulate solids. The particulate solids are separated into a plurality of streams. A mixed slurry comprising a first portion of the plurality of streams is injected through a first pipe into the first formation. A waste stream comprising a second portion of the plurality of streams is injected through a second pipe into a second formation. The first formation and the second formation lie in a substantially vertical line.

Systems and methods for dual reinjection

An improved method of producing hydrocarbons from a subterranean formation in which a solids-stabilized emulsion (SSE) is formed, the SSE comprising oil as a first liquid, droplets of a second liquid suspended in the oil, and solid particles that are insoluble in both the oil and the second liquid at the conditions of the subterranean formation. The SSE with dissolved gas is injected into the subterranean formation as a drive fluid, and at least a portion of the SSE is placed into one or more area of the subterranean formation having an in situ pressure sufficiently lower than the selected partial pressure to permit evolution of at least a portion of the gas from the oil. Furthermore, a method of making the foamy SSE is also provided.
