An implantable medical lead is disclosed herein. The lead may include a longitudinally extending body, an electrical conductor, a tube and an electrical component, such as, for example, an electrode for sensing or pacing, a defibrillation coil, a strain gage, a pressure sensor, a piezoelectric sensor, an integrated chip, an inductor, etc. The body may include a distal end and a proximal end. The electrical conductor may extend through the body between the proximal end and the distal end. The tube may be swaged about an outer circumferential portion of the electrical conductor. The electrical component may be on the body and electrically connected to the tube.

Implantable medical lead and method of making same

In fabricating a header assembly of an implantable medical device, one end of a bore contact wire attached to a connector block is keyed with one guiding channel at an upper region of a feedthru adapter and through the adapter to its undersurface. An opposite end is bent into conformance with an orientation channel on the adaptor undersurface. A tip end of a feedthru wire connected to electronic circuitry of the medical device and projecting out of a casing mounting surface is bent for alignment with the orientation channel so end portions of the feedthru wire and bore contact wire are in end to end engagement, then welded together. A plastic header is molded to encapsulate the adapter, connector block, and bore contact wire and, when solidified, has an undersurface for engagement on the casing and an elongated receptacle aligned with a connector block bore to receive the lead.

A body-implantable lead suitable for use in conjunction with implantable cardiac devices and method for assembling a body-implantable lead suitable for use in conjunction with implantable cardiac devices. The body-implantable lead includes a lead body having at least one inner lumen and at least one elongated conductor cable residing within the inner lumen. An end portion of the conductor cable is joined by an aligned weld joint directly to an end portion of a lead component. Exemplary lead components include, but are not limited to, an electrode member, an elongated conductive connector pin of a proximal connector, a conductor extending from a proximal end of a distal tip of the lead, and a second elongated conductor cable residing within a second inner lumen of the lead body.

Reduced-diameter body-implantable leads and methods of assembly

A housing for an implantable medical device comprises a metallic wall including a telemetry window having a thickness that is thinner than the remainder of the housing wall and having an electrical conductivity that is less than that of the remainder of the housing wall. In another embodiment, an implantable medical device casing comprises a metallic wall including a telemetry window received within an aperture defined by said casing wall, the window having an electrical conductivity that is less than that of the remainder of the casing wall. Pursuant to another embodiment, there is provided an implantable medical device incorporating a casing as described above that is hermetically sealed and encloses a transceiver for bidirectional telemetric communication through the telemetry window.

Implantable medical device having a casing providing high-speed telemetry

A method of joining a wound element, or coiled wire strand, and a mating component, or integral ledge member, of a body implantable lead assembly wherein the former has a interior passage and an end portion adapted to be received by the latter. In one embodiment, the integral ledge member is formed with an integral collar spaced from a terminal end thereof. The wound element is placed about the receiving portion and over the terminal end of the mating component and against the collar. The components are then joined by thermally fusing them together, preferably by means of a laser. If the collar and the wound element are fabricated of the same alloy, the thickness of the collar and the diameter of the coiled wire strand are designed to be substantially equal. If the components are fabricated of dissimilar alloys, then the thickness of the collar is relatively dimensioned with respect to the diameter of the strand in proportion to the relative thermal diffusivity of the alloy of the collar and of the alloy of the coiled wire strand. In another embodiment, a ring member is placed about, and in engagement with, the receiving portion of the mating component. Then the components are joined, by thermally fusing them together, preferably by targeting a laser beam directly on the ring member, without regard to whether the components are fabricated of the same alloy or of different alloys.

Laser welded joint for implantable lead

A technique for removing an implanted lead from a body includes the steps of releasably attaching a stylet to both the distal end of the implanted lead and to the proximal end of the implanted lead. This results in a substantially unified stylet and implanted lead structure whereby withdrawal of the stylet and of the implanted lead as a unit facilitates the complete removal of the implanted lead from the body. A threaded tip end may be used for threaded engagement with a tapped bore at the distal end of the implanted lead and at the proximal end, attachment being provided by a threaded region on the stylet distant from the threaded tip end for threaded engagement with a tapped bore of a connector pin integral with the implanted lead. In this instance, the diameter of the proximal threaded region on the stylet is greater than that of the threaded tip end. In one embodiment, the implanted lead is resiliently extensible and the stylet is greater in length than the implanted lead in its relaxed condition and tension is applied to the proximal end of the implanted lead to thereby stretch it so that the proximal end of the implanted lead is generally coextensive with the proximal end of the stylet.

A method of joining a longitudinally extending wound element, or coiled wire strand, and a mating component, or post, of a body implantable lead assembly wherein the former has a longitudinally extending interior passage and an end portion adapted to be received by the latter. In one embodiment, the post is formed with an integral collar spaced from a terminal end thereof. The wound element is placed about the receiving portion and over the terminal end of the mating component and against the collar. The components are then joined by thermally fusing them together, preferably by means of a laser. If the collar and the wound element are fabricated of the same alloy, the thickness of the collar and the diameter of the coiled wire strand are designed to be substantially equal. If the components are fabricated of dissimilar alloys, then the thickness of the collar is relatively dimensioned with respect to the diameter of the strand in proportion to the relative square roots of thermal diffusivity of the alloy of the collar and of the alloy of the coiled wire strand. In another embodiment, a ring member is placed about, and in engagement with, the receiving portion of the mating component. Then the components are joined, by thermally fusing them together, preferably by targeting a laser beam directly on the ring member, without regard to whether the components are fabricated of the same alloy or of different alloys.

Laser-welded joint

A method of joining an electrically-conductive elongate member, which may be a multi-strand cable, to an electrically-conductive electrode, possibly for an implantable medical device, requires that the free end of the electrically-conductive member be inserted axially into a longitudinally extending passage of a tubular crimp/weld sleeve. Thereupon, the crimp/weld sleeve is crimped onto the electrically-conductive elongate member to achieve firm engagement between the crimp/weld sleeve and the electrically-conductive elongate member. The crimp/weld sleeve is provided with a radially outward extending prominent member which may be one of a variety of shapes. The electrode is tubular, overlies the outer surface of a longitudinally extending lead body, and is formed with an aperture defined by a rim having a transverse dimension greater than the transverse dimension of the prominent member. The crimp/weld sleeve is received in a recess adjacent the outer peripheral surface of the lead body and the prominent member is inserted into the aperture of the tubular electrode. A laser beam is directed transversely through the aperture of the electrode and onto the prominent member to simultaneously melt the prominent member and the electrode in the region of the aperture and create a mixture of the molten material of both the prominent member and the electrode within the aperture. When operation of the laser beam ceases, a welded connection between the crimp/weld sleeve and the electrode is achieved.

Interconnection technique between a cable conductor and an electrode of an implantable medical device

A technique for joining an elongated wound element and a mating connector of a body implantable lead assembly comprises the steps of causing an end portion of the wound element to abut against a first end of a transition component having similar mass and heat transmission characteristics. The wound element is a coil of wire and the transition component is a ring member, both of which have similar inner and outer diameters. Further, the wire has a nominal diameter and the ring member has a similar transverse dimension. A laser beam is targeted generally at the location at which the end portion of the wound element abuts against the first end of the transition component such that the energy delivered thereto is substantially balanced between the wound element and the transition element, thereby thermally fusing the wound element and the transition component. The wound element and the transition component may be fabricated of the same alloy or of dissimilar alloys. Thereafter, a second end of the transition component distant from the first end is caused to abut against an end portion of the mating connector and the second end of the transition component is thermally fused to the end portion of the mating connector. In another embodiment, the ring member has an annular flange adjacent the first end, the annular flange being reduced in diameter substantially to the outer diameter of the wound element and of the mating connector upon completion of the thermal fusing step.

Joining a winding to a connector using a transition ring

A technique is presented for joining an elongated wound element having a plurality of filars and a mating component of a body implantable lead assembly. The wound element has a longitudinally extending interior passage and an end portion extending to a terminal end. The mating component includes a shoulder and an integral post extending away therefrom having an outer surface for receiving the end portion of the wound element, the diameter of the outer surface being smaller than that of the shoulder and larger than the diameter of the interior passage of the wound element. At a location spaced from the terminal end of the wound element, the end portion of the wound element and the receiving portion of the mating component are thermally fused together. This is performed by targeting a laser beam on the end portion of the wound element at a location spaced from the terminal end thereof to melt the wound element and the receiving portion of the mating component and thereby create a weld nugget. In actual fact, the laser beam is targeted at a plurality of circumferentially spaced locations about the end portion of the wound element, the number of such locations being determined by the following relationship:
