An acrylamide-based polymer which contains one or more multiquaternized ('multiquat') monomer unit(s) is provided. The acrylamide-based polymer can be used in a papermaking process to reduce pitch and stickies deposition, improve retention and drainage, and enhance dry strength properties of paper. Also included is a method of controlling pitch and stickies deposition in papermaking comprising treating pulp slurry with an acrylamide-based polymer which contains one or more multiquaternized ('multiquat') monomer unit(s).

Polymer for pitch and stickies deposition control in papermaking

Compositions and methods that preserve and enhance the brightness of pulp, and also improve the color of pulp or paper, when applied during different stages of a papermaking process, are disclosed. The compositions and methods maintain or enhance brightness, prevent yellowing, and enhance the performance of paper products. The compositions can include a mixture of reducing agents and can also include optical brighteners, chelants, polycarboxylates, or other additives. The mixture of reducing agents can include a borohydride, such as sodium borohydride, and any other reducing agent, such as a sulfite or bisulfite.

Processes and compositions for brightness improvement in paper production

A challenge in using recycled material in the papermaking process is the presence of hydrophobic organics with adhesive properties commonly known as 'stickies.' Hydrophobic agglomerates can result in spots or defects in the final paper product or deposit on papermaking equipment resulting in poor runnability and downtime. Technologies for monitoring and controlling microstickies exist. However, a need exists for a technique to rapidly determine the size and content of macrostickies (diameter&#x3e;100 microns) in recycled pulp process streams. The present invention is a device and method to perform real-time macrostickies and/or any visible hydrophobic particle analysis in an aqueous medium. Using the present invention, furnish quality can be monitored and treatment performance can be monitored and controlled. The technique is based on fluorescence image analysis to identify and count sticky particles as well as measure their size.

Method of monitoring macrostickies in a recycling and paper or tissue making process involving recycled pulp

The invention is directed towards methods and compositions for processes based on the combination of organic peroxyacids and ammonium salts that preserve and enhance the response to optical brighteners (fluorescent whitening dyes), brightness and improve color of pulp or paper when applied during different stages of the papermaking process are identified. The composition and method improve response to optical brighteners (fluorescent whitening dyes), maintain and/or enhance brightness and enhance the performance of paper products. Used in combination with optical brighteners the described agents produce a synergistic effect not previously identified in the paper process.

Method for improving brightness in bleached pulp

The invention provides methods and compositions for measuring the formation of scale within a process system. The method involves measuring changes in the cell fouling as reflected on the refraction index measurements of a liquid medium with a refractometer and determining the scale formation from changes in the cell fouling factor. This allows for a refractometer to determine the formation of scale in locations that otherwise would not be measurable.

The invention provides methods and compositions for the removal of lignin from water suspensions originating from lignocellulosic feedstocks. The method involves adding coagulants and flocculants to the suspension. While hydrolysis does remove some lignin, the pitch in many feedstocks prevents the hydrolysis from coming into contact with all of the lignin or so effectively blocks it that the lignin can re-condense. This is especially the case with low lignin grass based lignocellulosic feedstock. But with the addition of the inventive coagulants and flocculants, a phase separation substantially accelerates and lignin forms flocs that forms that physically separates the lignin from the pitch and the cellulose thereby makes removal the lignin from aqueous suspensions by decanting and filtration effective and easy.

A method of monitoring and inhibiting scale precipitation and deposition from spent liquor in pulp mill evaporators and concentrators is disclosed. The method includes connecting a black liquor deposition monitor to a pulp mill evaporator or concentrator and measuring the thermal conductivity on the outer surface of the monitor. A controller interprets the measured thermal conductivity and determines a level of scale deposition. If the level of scale deposition is above a predetermined level, the controller is operable to introduce a scale-inhibiting composition to the spent liquor. The scale-inhibiting composition may include organic polycarboxylic acids; organic fatty acids; low molecular weight and polymeric aromatic acids; organic acid esters, anhydrides, and amides; low molecular weight and polymeric aliphatic and aromatic sulfonic acids; and low molecular weight and polymeric amines; and any combinations.

A method for monitoring one or more deposits including microbiological deposits on a surface immersed in an aqueous medium of a process is disclosed. The method comprises: (a) providing a QCM that is in contact with an aqueous medium, wherein said QCM has a top side surface contacting the aqueous medium, and a second, bottom side surface isolated from the aqueous medium; (b) providing a composition that is selective for one or more deposit types, including microbiological deposits without the use of an antigen or an antibody; (c) applying said composition to the top side of said QCM surface; (d) measuring the rate of deposition of said deposits from the aqueous medium onto the top side of said QCM surface; and (e) optionally taking corrective action to change one or more process parameters, or chemistry applied to the process, or a combination thereof, to achieve a desired result in regards to microbiological deposition.
