A cutting tool includes a holder and a cutting insert releasably clamped in the holder. The holder has a rear pocket surface which includes a pocket abutment surface and an adjacent pocket wedge surface. The cutting insert has at least one abutment surface and an adjacent wedge surface. When the cutting tool is assembled but not in use, the pocket abutment surface of the holder abuts the abutment surface of the cutting insert, and the wedge surface of the holder is facing and spaced apart from the wedge surface of the cutting insert. During cutting operations, the wedge surface of the insert may abut against the wedge surface of the holder.

A cutting insert has a cutting portion corner formed at the intersection of a rake surface, a forward cutting portion surface and a relief surface. A cutting edge is formed at an intersection of the rake surface and the relief surface with a land that is located on the rake surface and that extends along, and negatively away from, the cutting edge. A chip-control arrangement is located at the rake surface and includes an elongated projection and plurality of spaced apart elongated protuberances that extend from the projection to the cutting edge, so that the land has a plurality of spaced apart bulging land portions. A tool assembly for heavy duty machining includes an insert, tool and clamp for securing the insert to a rigid insert seat of the tool. The insert is a solid cutting insert including a single cutting edge located at a corner region thereof. At a diagonally opposed corner region the insert is not subjected to clamping forces.

A swiss insert includes a chip former arrangement. The chip former arrangement includes a ridge separated on each side from a cutting edge's sub-edge by a chip surface. In a side view, each sub-edge extends in a straight line.

A cutting insert has a cutting edge formed at an intersection of a rake surface and a relief surface, with a chip-control arrangement located at the rake surface. The chip-control arrangement includes a plurality of recesses that extend downwardly into the rake surface and a plurality of projections that extend upwardly from the rake surface. The plurality of recesses follow a pattern of increasing depth in a rearward direction from the forward portion of the cutting edge. The plurality of projections follow a pattern of increasing height in a rearward direction from the forward portion of the cutting edge.

A multi-grooving tool holder for holding cutting members seated in a side-by-side formation in a clamping portion of the holder. The clamping portion includes an upper clamp and a lower clamp and an elastic member is located in one of the upper and lower clamps. When cutting members are assembled in the clamping portion, the elastic member engages the cutting members and aligns each cutting member independently, by applying a force, and consequently a moment on the cutting members.
