A 2D/3D switchable image display device is provided. The device includes an image panel, a backlight unit arranged at the rear side of the image panel, and a lenticular lens sheet arranged between the image panel and the backlight unit. The backlight unit includes a plurality of segment light sources for a left eye vision range which emit a light for a left eye vision range, and a plurality of segment light sources for a right eye vision range which emit a light for a right eye vision range. The segment light sources for the left eye vision range and the segment light sources for the right eye vision range are alternately arranged to form a surface light source. The lenticular lens sheet includes a plurality of semi-cylindrical lenses arranged in a direction perpendicular to a viewing direction of both eyes of a viewer.

Backlight unit and 2D/3D switchable image display device employing the backlight unit

Provided are a 2D (2-dimensional)/3D (3-dimensional) display apparatus using a scanning backlight and a method of controlling the same. The apparatus sequentially includes a backlight which is capable of scanning and irradiating polarized light, a retarder which transmits light emitted from the backlight as phase-maintained light and phase-delayed light, a lenticular array which transmits light from the retarder as directional light, and a display panel which displays an inputted image and which is illuminated by light being transmitted through the lenticular array. The backlight includes a plurality of light guide plates which are independently disposed and arranged in parallel with one another, a plurality of light sources which are provided for the respective light guide plates and emit light, and a plurality of polarization filters which are arranged in front of the respective light guide plates. The scanning frequency of the backlight is synchronized with the input frequency of the input frames so that an illumination function and a scanning function are simultaneously performed using one backlight, a 2D image and a 3D image are efficiently displayed and crosstalk is reduced.

Method of controlling a 2D/3D switchable display apparatus including a scanning backlight and a plurality of light guide plates

Provided are an apparatus and method for driving a 2-dimensional (2D)/3-dimensional (3D) switchable display for improving the quality of image. The apparatus for driving a 2D/3D switchable display includes: an image mode determination unit determining whether input image signals of continuous frames are in a 2D mode or 3D mode; and an over-driving control unit over-driving the input image signal of a current differently according to the determined image mode. According to the apparatus and method, the response time in each of the 2D mode and the 3D mode can be increased, while motion blur and cross-talk effects can be decreased, thereby improving the quality of image.

Apparatus and method for driving 2D/3D switchable display

An autostereoscopic display is provided which includes: a light source; a display panel which forms an image by controlling the transmittance of light incident from the light source; a display panel controller that controls the modulation of the display panel and that scans the display panel according to an image signal; a switching barrier that separates the viewing zone of an image beam incident from the display panel by electrically controlling light transmittance and which includes odd column cells and even column cells that are alternately arranged in a horizontal direction and are alternately switched between slits transmitting light and masks blocking light; and a switching barrier controller that controls barrier modes of the slits and the masks to be changed in synchronization with the scanning of the display panel.

Autostereoscopic display

Provided is a 2D-3D switching display system that includes a backlight, a liquid crystal panel which forms a 3D image using light generated by the backlight, a viewing zone separation unit which separates an image formed by the liquid crystal panel into a left eye image and a right eye image, and a display panel which transmits light passing through the viewing zone separation unit.

2D-3D image switching display system

A 2D/3D switchable display device includes a light source unit; a polarization switching unit for switching light from the light source unit to one of first polarized light and second polarized light, which is perpendicular to the first polarized light; a parallax barrier including slits and barriers that are alternately arranged, wherein the slits transmit incident light and the barriers transmit one of the first and second polarized light and reflect the other of the first and second polarized light; and a display panel for modulating light transmitted through the parallax barrier in response to an image signal to create an image. The 2D/3D switchable display device controls an electric signal applied to the polarization switching unit so that a 2D image and a 3D image are switched to each other.
