A sensor for use in detecting corrosion under insulation (CUI) and a method for deploying the same that does not require removal of cladding and/or insulation. The sensor includes at least a first sensor element formed of a first metal and a second sensor element formed of a second metal, the first and second metals being different. One or a plurality of sleeve members formed of an electrically-insulating material, such as plastic, maintain the first and second sensor elements at a predetermined distance from each other and define at least one sensing region that extends between the first and second sensor elements. The first and second sensor elements are configured to electrically communicate based on a conductive solution being disposed in the at least one sensing region and causing a galvanic current to be induced therebetween.

Corrosion sensors suitable for corrosion under insulation (CUI) detection

A method of magnetostrictive (MS) guided wave testing of a ferromagnetic structure. One or more MS transmitters, each configured as a patch of ferromagnetic material, are acoustically coupled to the structure. Each MS transmitter is magnetized to produce a bias magnetic field in the patch. One or more MS receivers are acoustically coupled to the structure in a location remote from the MS transmitter(s). An alternating current (AC) is applied to the structure, thereby producing time-varying magnetic fields and MS vibrations in the MS transmitter(s) resulting in guided waves in the structure. MS response signals are received at the MS receiver(s), indicating whether the structure has any anomalies.

Magnetostrictive testing with wireless transmitter(s) and remote receiver(s)

A guided wave probe for use in guided wave testing of plate structures. The probe comprises a cup having a flat or nearly flat bottom, and a guided wave sensor, such as a magnetostrictive sensor, placed in the bottom of the cup. The sensor and/or cup are coupled to the plate structure, such that ultrasonic energy from the sensor is transmitted to the cup and the plate surface. The sensor is incrementally rotated in the cup, and sensor data is acquired at each incremental position.

A ferromagnetic strip sensor for use in magnetostrictive testing of various structures. In its simplest form, the sensor has a ferromagnetic strip with an electrical coil winding. A permanent magnet is positioned atop the strip, aligned with but offset from, a center axis of the strip. The sensor is operable such that a time varying current in the coil results in a unidirectional guided wave. This guided wave travels within the structure, and is reflected from anomalies in the structure.

Various embodiments of magnetostrictive transducers (MsTs) for detecting defects in a tubular structure comprise one or more AC coils and one or more magnets. The transducer has a pair of coils (or two coil elements), which are spaced 180 degrees apart relative to the circumference of the tubular structure. Each MsT is selectively operable or configurable so that it may generate either torsional or flexural guided waves.

Paired magnetostrictive transducers for non destructive testing of tubular structures with selective torsional or flexural wave modes

A non contact sensor for use in magnetostrictive testing of a solid ferrous structure. In its simplest form, the sensor has a set of permanent magnets arranged in a row with their poles in the same direction, an electrical coil wrapped around the set of magnets, wrapped in direction parallel to the common poles of the magnets, thereby forming a top portion above the set of magnets and a bottom portion below the set of magnets, and a metal shield interposed between the top portion of the coil and the set of magnets. The sensor is operable such that a time varying current in the coil causes guided waves to travel to the structure and to be reflected from anomalies in the structure even when there is no ferromagnetic coupling material between the sensor and the structure.

Non-contact magnetostrictive sensor for guided wave monitoring of wire ropes or other solid ferrous objects without ferromagnetic coupling

A probe for use in magnetostrictive testing of tubular structures. The probe has a handle and an outer tube, the latter having an expandable probe head for insertion into the tubular structure. A pair of magnetostrictive sensors is mounted in or on the probe head. A flexible bladder is located inside the outer tube in the area of the probe head, and communicates with a pressurizing cartridge in the probe handle via a bladder tube. The bladder is operable to expand, causing the probe head to expand, which moves the sensors toward the inner wall of the tubular structure. The probe is also equipped with a couplant injector that delivers coupling fluid to any gaps between the inner surface of the tubular structure and the outer surface of the probe.

A system and method for non-destructive monitoring a component including a guided wave sensor positioned around a surface of the component, wherein the component has a perimeter. A first spring mounting clamp positioned around the component perimeter and a second spring mounting clamp positioned around the component perimeter, wherein the first and second mounting clamps are positioned a distance of 0.1 inches to 5.0 inches on either side of the guided wave sensor. A plurality of elongated springs is attached at a first end to the first spring mounting clamp and attached at a second end to the second spring mounting clamp. The central portion applying a pressure of at least 10 psi to the guided wave sensor.

Methods and devices for long term structural health monitoring of pipelines and vessels

A sensor for use in magnetostrictive testing of a structure. An array of sensor elements is attached to a flexible backing. Each sensor element has a thin strip made from magnetostrictive material, a first coil wrapped around the width of the strip and operable to provide a DC bias magnetic field, and a second coil wrapped around the width of the strip and operable for MsS generation and detection. Typically, the first coils of all strips are electrically connected to each other and the second coils of all strips are electrically connected to each other, to form two separate coil circuits. The probe may be wrapped around the circumference of a cylindrical structure, and used for magnetostrictive testing.

Flexible magnetostrictive probe having sensor elements without permanent magnets

A sensor for use in magnetostrictive testing of a structure. The sensor has a thin ferromagnetic strip with a series of parallel crimps across its width. A first wire coil is wrapped around the width of the strip and along its entire length, such that portions of wire that cross the bottom surface of the strip are located inside the crimps, and portions of wire that are wrapped across the top surface of the strip are between the crimps. The sensor further has a second coil wrapped around the length of the strip, or for pipeline applications, around the pipeline.

The present disclosure relates to a system for monitoring a structural component. The system may include an electromechanical device to generate guided waves having a measurement surface and a bonding agent disposed on the measurement surface and configured to engage with the surface of the structural component. The system may also include a heating element for heating the measurement surface, the bonding agent, and capable of heating a portion of the structural component surface. In addition, the system may include a clamp for retaining the measurement surface relative to the structural component.

Method and device for long-term monitoring of components using guided waves

A method is shown for magnetostrictive testing of structures using magnetostrictive techniques. A torsional guided wave is generated in the structure either directly, or through a magnetostrictive strip dry coupled or bonded to the structure. A permanent magnetic field is created by either permanent magnets or DC current for a permanent bias in a bias direction in the magnetostrictive strip and/or structure. By pulsing the magnetic field with an AC current pulse, a torsional guided wave will flow through the structure in the same direction as the permanent bias. By saturating the permanent magnetic field, a maximum torsional guided wave is reflected from defects in the structure to given an improved signal to noise ratio.

Method and system for generating and receiving torsional guided waves in a structure

A method is shown for magnetostrictive testing of structures using a magnetostrictive strip and magnetostrictive techniques. A torsional guided wave is generated in the magnetostrictive strip which is dry coupled or bonded to the structure. A magnetic field creates an induced bias along the longitudinal axis of the magnetostrictive strip, which magnetic field is sufficiently strong so that when an AC pulse applies an AC bias perpendicular to the induced bias, the AC bias does not override or saturate the induced bias. This allows for an increased signal to noise ratio in a reflected signal indicating a defect in the structure. The induce bias and the AC bias are created by respective windings around the magnetostrictive strip, which windings are perpendicular to each other.
