An embodiment of a method of predicting drilling assembly performance includes: acquiring measurements of electromagnetic (EM) radiation emitted due to destruction of formation materials by a drilling assembly during a drilling operation; selecting input parameters, the input parameters including drilling assembly parameters, operational parameters, and the measurements of the EM radiation; supplying the input parameters to a mathematical drillability model; and generating a rock drillability parameter using the drillability model and the input parameters, the rock drillability parameter providing an indication of drilling performance.

Predicting drillability based on electromagnetic emissions during drilling

A method for determining at least one electrical property of an earth formation includes emitting an electromagnetic signal into the earth formation from an antenna and measuring an electromagnetic signal from the earth formation. The antenna is a broadband log antenna mounted on a substrate having at least a high dielectric permittivity, defined as a dielectric permittivity of about &#x2208;=100 to &#x2208;=1000 or a gigantic dielectric permittivity, defined as a dielectric permittivity of about &#x2208;=1000 or greater. The antenna has a radius between about 2.5 millimeters (mm) and 10 centimeters (cm). The method further includes determining at least one electrical property of one or more of a borehole, a borehole fluid, and the earth formation based on measuring the electromagnetic signal.

Imaging of earth formation with high frequency sensor

A method and apparatus for measuring the resistivity anisotropy of cylindrical rock samples is disclosed. The measurement setup includes two pairs of electrodes that contact the sample surface. The ring electrodes of the first pair are disposed on the cylindrical surface of the sample. The cap electrodes of the second pair are mounted at the sample ends. Two differences in potentials are measured. One of the cap electrodes and the nearest ring electrode are used to measure the first difference that results from current injected through the remaining cap and ring electrodes. The second difference is measured between the two ring electrodes, while current is injected through the first and second end cap electrodes. These two differences are inverted for the anisotropy coefficient, horizontal and vertical resistivity.
