A rotary cutting tool includes a shank portion, a cutting portion, and a cutting tip. The cutting portion includes a plurality of blades and a plurality of flutes. Each blade includes a leading face, a trailing face, and a land surface extending between the leading face and the trailing face. The cutting end includes an end cutting edge having a first end face cutting edge portion formed with a positive, neutral or negative radial angle, a positive dish angle and a negative axial rake angle, and second end face cutting edge portion formed with a highly positive radial angle, a positive dish angle and a negative axial rake angle. The highly positive radial angle of the second end face cutting edge portion enables the rotary cutting tool to perform a ramp operation at very large ramp angles of between about 15-45 degrees.

A cutting tool includes: a body extending along a longitudinal axis between a leading and trailing ends, the body having a clamping region disposed at or about the trailing end and a cutting region which extends toward the clamping region from the leading end of the body; a plurality of flutes defined in the body, each extending from the leading end toward the coupling portion; a plurality of peripheral cutting edges, each extending from the leading end toward the coupling portion along a corresponding flute of the plurality of flutes; and a plurality of end cutting edges disposed at the leading end, each end cutting edge extending from at or near the longitudinal axis outward along a corresponding flute. At least one end cutting edge is defined, in-part, by a plurality of rake faces which each extend from a corresponding portion of the one cutting edge into the corresponding flute.

In one aspect, rotary cutting tools are described comprising clearances with projections adjacent the cutting edge and extending the width and length of the clearance surface of each tooth. This design can assist in reducing vibration or chatter during cutting operations.

A flute is defined between the leading face of a trailing tooth, and a rear face of an immediately preceding tooth. One aspect of the invention provides a cutting tool used for peripheral cutting operations, comprising: a plurality of peripheral cutting edges, and a plurality of flutes disposed between the peripheral cutting edges, wherein each of the flutes includes at least one surface, and at least one depression recessed into the at least one flute surface, wherein each of the depressions defines a depression interior configured to trap cooling liquid during operation of the cutting tool, and wherein at least one of the depressions is dimensioned and disposed to enhance heat dissipation at least one of the peripheral cutting edges.

In one aspect, elongated rotary cutting tools such as end mills are described herein which may provide one or more advantages over prior designs. For example, in some embodiments, cutting tools described herein can provide reduced wear rates at corner cutting edges, may permit high ramp angles during processing up to and including 45&#xb0; ramp angles, and/or increased tool life.

A rotary cutting tool with a longitudinal axis includes a shank portion and a cutting portion defining a length of cut. The cutting portion includes a plurality of blades separated by flutes extending along the length of cut. A first blade forms a first helix angle with respect to the longitudinal axis at the cutting tip. A second blade adjacent the first blade forms a second, different helix angle with respect to the longitudinal axis at the cutting tip. A third blade adjacent the second blade forms a third, different helix angle with respect to the longitudinal axis at the cutting tip. The first, second and third helix angles deviate by at least 2 degrees. The cutting edges of the first, second and third blades have unequal indexing.

A modular cutter head having a holder defining a threaded receiver. The cutter head can be screwed into the threaded receiver. The cutter can comprise an elongated body portion having a cutting end and cutting edge and an elongated coupling portion spaced from the cutting end, with the coupling portion comprising a core and a plurality of generally helically-extending start threads disposed circumferentially about the core. The cutter head may also include a cutting end having a chip flute and an insert seat.
