Silicon photonic integrated circuit (PIC) on a multi-zone semiconductor on insulator (SOI) substrate having at least a first zone and a second zone. Various optical devices of the PIC may be located above certain substrate zones that are most suitable. A first length of a photonic waveguide structure comprises the crystalline silicon and is within the first zone, while a second length of the waveguide structure is within the second zone. Within a first zone, the crystalline silicon layer is spaced apart from an underlying substrate material by a first thickness of dielectric material. Within the second zone, the crystalline silicon layer is spaced apart from the underlying substrate material by a second thickness of the dielectric material.

The present disclosure relates to pretreating a magnetic recording head for magnetic media drive. For a heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head, a light source provides the necessary heat for the drive to operation. A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is mounted to a top surface of a slider. A plurality of laser beams are emitted from the bottom surface of the VCSEL and directed to a corresponding number of waveguide structures within the HAMR head. The waveguide structures feed into a multimode interference (MMI) device that then directs the laser into a single waveguide for focusing on a near field transducer (NFT). The VCSEL lasers are phase coherent and have no mode hopping.

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) write apparatus includes a laser for providing energy and resides in proximity to a media during use. The HAMR write apparatus includes a write pole that writes to a region of the media, coil(s) for energizing the write pole and a waveguide optically coupled with the laser. The waveguide includes at least one multi-mode interference (MMI) device. The MMI device has at least one input, a plurality of outputs, a propagation section and a multi-mode interference (MMI) section. Energy from the laser propagates through the propagation section before the MMI section. The propagation section expands the energy from the laser to a plurality of modes. A first portion of the outputs is output from the propagation section. The MMI section is between the propagation section and a second portion of the plurality of outputs.

Method and system for providing a HAMR writer including a multi-mode interference device

A heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) writer is described. The HAMR writer is coupled with a laser that provides energy having a first polarization state. The HAMR writer has an air-bearing surface (ABS) configured to reside in proximity to a media during use, a plurality of waveguides, a main pole and at least one coil. The main pole writes to the media and is energized by the coil(s). The waveguides receive the energy from the laser and direct the energy toward the ABS. The waveguides include an input waveguide and an output waveguide. The input waveguide is configured to carry light having the first polarization state. The output waveguide is configured to carry light having a second polarization state different from the first polarization state. The waveguides are optically coupled and configured to transfer the energy from the first polarization state to the second polarization state.

Heat assisted magnetic recording writer having integrated polarization rotation waveguides

A heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS) and includes a pole, coil(s) and a waveguide. The waveguide is optically coupled with a laser and directs energy toward the MFS. The waveguide includes an entrance, a bottom and a mode converter having a core, an inner cladding, high index layer(s) and an outer cladding. The core has sides that diverge in width. The core has a first index of refraction. The outer cladding has a second index of refraction less than the first index of refraction. The inner cladding has a third index of refraction not greater than the second index of refraction. The inner cladding is between the high index layer(s) and the core. The high index layer(s) are between the inner and outer cladding. The high index layer(s) have a high index of refraction greater than the second index of refraction.

Heat assisted magnetic recording write apparatus having an inverse tapered waveguide

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) write apparatus includes a laser and has an air-bearing surface (ABS) that resides in proximity to a media during use. The HAMR write apparatus includes a write pole that writes to the media, coil(s) for energizing the write pole and a waveguide optically coupled with the laser. The waveguide includes an entrance distal from the ABS and a bottom proximate to the ABS. The waveguide also includes a mode converter, a mode stripper optically coupled with the mode converter and an inverse tapered section optically coupled with the mode stripper. The mode converter has sides converging from a first width proximate to the entrance to a second width distal from the entrance and less than the first width. The mode stripper is between the inverse tapered section and the mode converter. The inverse tapered section has an entrance and an exit wider than the entrance.

Method and system for providing a HAMR writer having improved optical efficiency

Improved pump-probe testing methods and apparatuses for measuring the performance of a plasmon element at wafer level are provided. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a light source configured to output a first light beam on a grating located at a first end of a waveguide, the waveguide being configured to couple energy of the first light beam to the plasmon element located at a second end of the waveguide, and an optical probe assembly positioned above a top surface of the wafer. The optical probe assembly is configured to direct a second light beam on an area of the wafer including the plasmon element and detect a portion of the second light beam reflected from the area.

Methods and apparatuses for performing wafer level characterization of a plasmon element

A structure for measuring energy absorption by a surface plasmon receptor or NFT on a waveguide comprises a first waveguide, a first input grating for coupling light comprising a first wavelength into the first waveguide, a first output grating for coupling light out of the first waveguide, a first plurality of surface plasmon receptors in cooperation with the first waveguide to receive light energy and located between the first input grating and the first output grating. The structure may further comprise a second waveguide, a second input grating for coupling light into the second waveguide, a second output grating for coupling light out of the second waveguide, a second plurality of surface plasmon receptors between the second input grating and the second output grating and in cooperation with the second waveguide to receive light energy, wherein the second plurality may be less than or greater than the first plurality.

Structure and method to measure waveguide power absorption by surface plasmon element

Systems and methods for controlling light phase difference in interferometric waveguides at near field transducers by selectively heating the light source are provided. One such system for controlling light phase at the NFT of an interferometric waveguide includes a laser, a heater configured to heat the laser, a splitter configured to receive light from the laser and to split the light into a first waveguide arm and a second waveguide arm, the first waveguide arm and the second waveguide arm converging at a junction about opposite the splitter, and the NFT proximate the junction and configured to receive the light, where the first waveguide arm is longer than the second waveguide arm by a preselected distance, and where the heater is configured to generate and maintain a preselected phase difference in the light arriving at the NFT via the first waveguide arm and the second waveguide arm.
