A system including an instrumented sub for supporting subterranean operations, the instrumented sub can include an upper and lower portion with a flow passage extending therethrough, and a valve that selectively permits or restricts fluid flow through the flow passage, and a rotary interface coupled to the upper portion and including a rotary portion and a stationary portion, where the rotary portion is rotationally fixed to the upper portion and rotates with the upper portion, where the stationary portion is rotationally coupled to the rotary portion, and where the rotary interface transfers communication signals between the stationary portion and the rotary portion to transmit commands or data to or receive the commands or data from one or more components of the instrumented sub. Can also include a method of using the instrumented sub to determine a vertical position or movement of a top drive.

A system including a logging tool that can detect gamma rays in a wellbore, where the logging tool can have a window formed in an outer surface of a drill collar that allows increased sensitivity of a gamma ray detector assembly housed within the drill collar, with a body of the drill collar radially surrounding the gamma ray detector assembly, where the window can be filled with a material, and where the windows provide increased sensitivity to gamma rays in a wellbore in an azimuthal direction allowing azimuthal mapping of the gamma rays in formation surrounding the wellbore.

An embodiment of the present disclosure is an acoustic logging tool for determining a characteristic of a ground formation during a drilling operation. The acoustic logging tool includes a transmitter section that houses a transmitter that is configured to emit an acoustic signal and a receiver section spaced from the transmitter section along an axial direction. The receiver section includes a receiver that is configured to receive at least a portion of the acoustic signal. The acoustic logging tool also includes an isolator section positioned between the transmitter section and the receiver section along the axial direction.

Nuclear magnetic resonance well logging apparatus and method of use for geophysical examination of a borehole as the borehole is drilled. The apparatus is connected to the drill bit to follow it through the borehole as the borehole is formed. The apparatus comprises a non-magnetic protective collar with lateral protrusions or wings, which provide enhanced abrasion resistance, strength, and rigidity to the probe section. This collar is twisted about its longitudinal axis. The apparatus also comprises one or more permanent magnets within the metal collar and an antenna mounted outside of the collar. Both the magnet and the antenna are twisted about the longitudinal axis of the probe section to produce a generally helical static magnetic field and a radio frequency magnetic field that is substantially orthogonal to the static magnetic field.

System and method for NMR logging with helical polarization

A magnet assembly and a magnetic field configuration are disclosed for the generation of a magnetic field in a defined volume, with the field being homogeneous over a pre-determined portion of the volume and not homogeneous over the rest. The disclosed magnetic assembly has a plurality of spaced-apart magnets arranged in pairs. The magnets of each pair are be positioned diametrically opposite each other with respect to an enclosed volume. In different embodiments magnets may all be arranged such that their magnetization directions are substantially aligned, or could alternatively be arranged to have magnetizations pointing in different directions. The angular spacing between the magnets is selected in the range of approximately 13&#xb0;-17&#xb0; and could be as large as the size of the magnets. The assembly generates a homogeneous magnetic field within an inner portion of the defined volume, and a second magnetic field, substantially different from the homogeneous magnetic field throughout the remainder, i.e., in the periphery of the defined volume.
