A method and apparatus for tobacco smoke filter production wherein a train of tobacco smoke filtering material, while being continuously advanced longitudinally, is gathered towards rod shape and then shaped to and secured in rod form, and wherein there is discontinuous pneumatic injection of particulate additive through an injector conduit laterally into the advancing gathering material to form separate additive pockets embedded in and spaced along the continuously produced rod.

Tobacco smoke filter production

A process of manufacturing composite filter stock is provided that includes several steps. In a first step, a paper carrier strip feeds along a conveyor. Along one edge of the carrier strip, the paper is folded back against itself. Fibrous filter segments are then deposited on the carrying strip in spaced apart intervals. The spacing defines cavities between adjacent filter segments. The carrier strip with the deposited filter segments is fed along a path of travel into an elongated guide or support chamber that substantially surrounds the circumference of the paper-enveloped segments and which leaves a narrow fill opening opposite an elongated particulate filling opening that is elongated in the direction of motion of the carrying strip. Suction or a vacuum is concurrently applied adjacent the narrow opening, the suction increasing a downward momentum of a gravity feed stream of particulate matter and concurrently vacuums away loose particulate matter. The cavities are concurrently filled with the particulate matter over a length corresponding to a predetermined path of travel of the carrying strip. The folded over edge is then unfolded and adhered to seal the fill opening. The filter stock is then cut to length, the cutting being registered to create discrete composite filter segments.

Process and apparatus for high-speed filling of composite cigarette filters

The process serves to more precisely aromatize and/or remove certain smoke fume constituents from tobacco smoke or tobacco smoke drawn from a cigarette, by means of a flowable carrier material or filtration material for aromatizing products, arranged in a cavity (1) of a mouthpiece of the cigarette. For this purpose, the flowable active carrier material or filter material (2) for aromatizing products is, before being put into this cavity (1), mixed with at least one flowable material (3) which is inactive with respect to tobacco smoke flowing through to give a mixture which is as homogeneous as possible, and, mixed in this way, is introduced into the cavity (1).

Process for aromatizing and/or filtering tobacco smoke, cigarette end

In order, when a cigarette is being smoked, to reduce, or even reverse, the tendency of the condensate-content to increase, a cigarette filter unit is proposed in which at least one partition having at least two areas of different porosities and made of a material which allows smoke to pass through it, is arranged between each two filter elements aligned axially with one another in the flow cross section of the filter unit. In this connection, a first partition area is designed in such a manner that its permeability decreases as the portion of tobacco associated with the cigarette filter unit is smoked, the tobacco smoke, passing through the said cigarette filter unit, flowing increasingly through the second partition area.

Cigarette filter unit and method for the production thereof

In order to obtain, during the smoking of a cigarette, each time the smoker draws, an amount of condensate which is more constant or is even less than heretofore, there is provided a cigarette filter unit having at least one membrane in the form of a screen positioned across the smoke-gas flow paths, the unit acting, while the cigarette is being smoked, as an internal bypass element. To this end, the spatial distribution of the openings in the membrane, and the cross sectional areas thereof, are accurately determined as to the size and shape. The thickness of the membrane is between 10 and 150 .mu.m, the number of openings therein is between 500 and 25,000, and the cross sectional area of the openings is between 80 and 3,000 .mu.m.sup.2. Furthermore, an additional element providing at least one flow aperture whose cross section is at least 10 times larger than that of the largest opening in the membrane and/or the ventilating openings, is provided after the membrane, as seen in the direction of flow, extending between the interior and the exterior of the filter unit.

Cigarette filter unit

A highly-porous silica gel charged with 10% by weight of anethole and 20% by weight of deactivating agent is used in the tip of a cigarette in order to aromatize the smoke drawn from the cigarette in a simple way with anethole even after prolonged storage of the cigarette.
