It has been found that the chemical reactivity of the metal surface of heat exchangers with coolants in presence of nitrites can be reduced by the addition of additives such as phosphonates or phosphinates. Aluminum, other Group III metals, as well as other metals commonly used in cooling systems, such as those of automobile engines, may thus be effectively protected.

Coolant having rapid metal passivation properties

A composition includes a continuous phase of water, alcohol, or a mixture of water and alcohol; hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles dispersed in the continuous phase; and a compound having a formula (I) or a salt thereof, wherein n is an integer between 50 and 200 and y is an integer between 20 and 200.

Stabilization of hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles

This invention covers a formulation providing protection against corrosion in liquid and vapor phase. Such formulations are used in applications where engine parts or fuel cell systems are subjected to a 'running-in' or 'hot-test' prior to final assembly or storage. The invention includes a concentrate as well as a dilute solution. The synergistic combination of inorganic ammonium derivatives in combination with monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acids increases the period of protection. This enables storage for a longer period when the engine parts are shipped or stored prior to assembling. The use of the described invention pre-conditions the metal surface and provides protection even if afterwards the liquid is almost completely removed.

Hot test fluid containing vapor phase inhibition

The technology of this invention relates to an aqueous heat transfer solution exhibiting enhanced stability as well as thermal conductivity. The solution comprises silicon oxide nanoparticles, to which a freezing point depressant may potentially be added. The solution provides protection against forms of corrosion for use in applications where cooling is critical. The invention also covers the use of a concentrate as well as the dilution made from the concentrate.

Coolant formulations

An antifreeze composition having improved thermal stability is provided. In one embodiment, the antifreeze concentrate composition comprises from 50 to 99.8 wt. % of a glycol-based freezing point depressant selected from the group of: alkylene glycols, glycol monoethers, glycerins, and mixtures thereof; 0.01 to 10 wt. % of at least one of a 2-ethylhexanoic acid, isononanoic acid and 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid; and 0.01 to 5 wt. % of at least one of octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, undecanoic acid, dodecanoic acid, neodecanoic acid, benzoic acid, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-terbutylbenzoic acid, and mixtures thereof. In one embodiment, the composition is employed as a concentrate in admixture with 10 to 90 wt. % water. In one embodiment no more than one dicarboxylic acid is used as an additive. In another embodiment no dicarboxylic acid is present.

Antifreeze concentrate, coolant composition, and preparation thereof

A molybdate-free antifreeze composition having improved thermal stability is provided. In one embodiment, the antifreeze concentrate composition comprises from 50 to 99 wt. % of a glycol-based freezing point depressant selected from the group of: alkylene glycols, glycol monoethers, glycerins, and mixtures thereof; 0.01 to 10 wt. % of at least one of a 2-ethylhexanoic acid, isononanoic acid and 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid; and 0.01 to 5 wt. % of at least one of heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, undecanoic acid, dodecanoic acid, neodecanoic acid, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-terbutylbenzoic acid, and mixtures thereof. In one embodiment, the composition is employed as a concentrate in admixture with 10 to 90 wt. % water.

Molybdate-free antifreeze concentrate and coolant compositions and preparation thereof

A toxicological friendly antifreeze composition having improved thermal stability is provided. In one embodiment, the antifreeze composition comprises from 5 to 80 wt. % of an aqueous freezing point depressant selected from alkali metal salts of acetates, formates, proprionates, adipiates, and succinates, and mixtures thereof; 0.1 to 10 wt. % of at least one of a 2-ethylhexanoic acid, isononanoic acid and 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid; and 0.1 to 10 wt. % of at least one of octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, undecanoic acid, dodecanoic acid, neodecanoic acid, benzoic acid, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-terbutylbenzoic acid, and mixtures thereof. In one embodiment, the composition is employed as a concentrate in admixture with 10 to 90 wt. % water. The composition may be totally free of glycol, or, in an alternate embodiment, possess a glycol:non-glycol base ratio of 1:2 to 1:20.

The application of carboxylate salts for storing thermal energy is disclosed. The invention is directed to methods for the storage and use of thermal energy comprising contacting mixtures of alkali metal salts or alkali earth metal salts of carboxylic acids, storing the thermal energy in the mixture, containing the mixture in a suitable heat exchange system and using the stored thermal energy in the heat exchange system.

Carboxylate salts in heat-storage applications

The invention relates to a method for cooling an electrical system comprising circulating in a cooling system of the electrical system a mixture comprising a heat transfer fluid and one or more carboxylic acid salts thereof, wherein the electrical conductivity of the mixture is less than 100 &#x3bc;S/cm.

Methods for fuel cell coolant systems

Corrosion protection of magnesium and aluminum alloys in engine coolants and heat-exchange fluids is achieved by the use of a select group of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylate acids or the alkaline metal, ammonium or amine salts thereof in combination with a fluoride and/or a fluorocarboxylic acid or salt thereof. These compositions have been found to significantly improve the high temperature magnesium corrosion protection properties of coolants, and are of use in automobile engine coolant systems.
