A display panel includes an array of display pixels to output an image. The array of display pixels includes a central pixel region and a perimeter pixel region. The central pixel region includes central pixel units each having three different colored sub-pixels. The different colored sub-pixels of the central pixel units are organized according to a central layout pattern that repeats across the central pixel region. The perimeter pixel region is disposed along a perimeter of the central pixel region and includes perimeter pixel units that increase a brightness of the image along edges of the central pixel region to mask gaps around the array of display pixels when tiling the array of display pixels with other arrays of display pixels.

An illumination module includes a color conversion cavity with a first interior surface having a first wavelength converting material and a second interior surface having a second wavelength converting material. A first LED is configured to receive a first current and to emit light that preferentially illuminates the first interior surface. A second LED is configured to receive a second current and emit light that preferentially illuminates the second interior surface. The first current and the second current are selectable to achieve a range of correlated color temperature (CCT) of light output by the LED based illumination device.

A light emitting diode (LED) based illumination device include a plurality of LEDS mounted to mounting board and includes a transmissive plate disposed above the LEDs. The transmissive plate includes an amount of wavelength converting material configured to change a wavelength of an amount of light emitted by the plurality of LEDs. A base reflector structure is coupled to the LED mounting board and the transmissive plate between at least two of the LEDs. In another configuration, a dam of reflective material surrounds the LEDs and is coupled to the LED mounting board and the transmissive plate, while a dam of thermally conductive material surrounds the dam of reflective material. In another configuration, the LED mounting board has a protrusion of thermally conductive material that surrounds the LEDs and is coupled to the transmissive plate, and has a void on the side opposite the protrusion.

Integrated LED based illumination device

A light emitting device comprises a flip-chip light emitting diode (LED) die mounted on a submount. The top surface of the submount has a reflective layer. Over the LED die is molded a hemispherical first transparent layer. A low index of refraction layer is then provided over the first transparent layer to provide TIR of phosphor light. A hemispherical phosphor layer is then provided over the low index layer. A lens is then molded over the phosphor layer. The reflection achieved by the reflective submount layer, combined with the TIR at the interface of the high index phosphor layer and the underlying low index layer, greatly improves the efficiency of the lamp. Other material may be used. The low index layer may be an air gap or a molded layer. Instead of a low index layer, a distributed Bragg reflector may be sputtered over the first transparent layer.

LED-based illumination device with color converting surfaces

An optical element suitable for separating and converting directions of polarization, comprising polarization-separating members arranged in a row which extends transversely to an optical principal axis of the optical element for separating incident light from a light source into transmitted light having a first linear direction of polarization and reflected light having a second linear direction of polarization which, on a side facing the light source, is orthogonal to the first direction of polarization, which polarization-separating members have faces extending at an angle to the optical principal axis, while each polarization-separating member has a thickness in the direction of the optical principal axis and a width in a direction transverse to the optical principal axis. The optical element further includes polarization-converting members arranged on a side of the polarization-separating members that faces away from the light source for converting either one of said first or said second direction of polarization into said second or said first direction of polarization. Polarization-separating members arranged proximate to the optical principal axis have a width which is different from the width of polarization-separating members spaced apart from the optical principal axis. The spacing between the optical axes of the polarization-separating members arranged proximate to the optical principal axis is different from the spacing between the optical axes of the polarization-separating members spaced apart from the optical principal axis.

Optical element and projection system

Color projection system includes a light source, an integrator plate arranged in front of the light source and having a plurality of juxtaposed lens elements, an electro-optical light modulation panel arranged in front of the integrator plate, a projection lens preceding the light modulation panel, and a movable color filter which is provided with a plurality of parallel extending, differently colored strips. The color filter is located opposite the integrator plate, which color filter and integrator plate are movable relative to each other in a direction extending parallel to the integrator plate, while at least two differently colored strips are located opposite each lens element, while strips of the same color have the same position with respect to each lens element.
