The invention proposes a system for providing mobility to a terminal through at least two different mobility protocols, wherein a mobility gateway and a terminal share a common mobility session, said common mobility session can be updated through any of the said different mobility protocols, and each mobility protocol provides information to the terminal related to all other mobility protocol during a registration. The invention also proposes a corresponding gateway, a terminal and method.

Combining IP and cellular mobility

The basic idea of the invention is to separate the location area used in the RAN and the reporting area used when reporting the location of the mobile to the core network. The size of the location area is selected preferably in the RAN based on the services used by the subscriber to optimize the use of radio resources. A reporting area comprises one or a plurality of location areas. The size of a reporting area is selected based on the accuracy of location information needed in the core network. The RAN informs the core network when a subscriber moves out of his current location area. The core network and the radio access network negotiate the size of the reporting area prior to the activation of the service. Additionally, the reporting areas can be renegotiated when the service is in the active state.

Location management in a mobile telecommunication system

An apparatus is provided that includes a controller configured to detect at least one predefined event and, in response to the detection of the predefined event, to trigger a handover of the communication device from a first access system to a second access system on the basis of the power efficiency of the second access system. The predefined event may be in communications between a communication device and a communication system and/or may be in relation to power consumption. Corresponding communication systems, methods and controllers are also provided.

The invention relates to a method of transmitting packet data from a first subsystem to a wireless terminal device via the network node of a second subsystem. In the method, at least one filter is formed to guide mapping of at least one data flow of the first subsystem to at least one data flow of the second subsystem. At least one filter is attached to at least one data flow of the second subsystem. The filter comprises at least part of the interface identifier of the IP address, which at least part of the interface identifier is allocated in the wireless terminal device. Hereby, mapping of the data flow of the first subsystem to the data flow of the second subsystem is performed on the basis of the interface identifiers of the destination IP addresses in the received packets.

Transmission of packet data to a wireless terminal

Embodiments of the invention include a method comprising monitoring a traffic pattern relating to a terminal, and regulating states of the terminal according to the monitored traffic pattern. Other embodiments relate to associated apparatus, communication systems, network elements and computer program products.

Traffic monitoring for regulating states of a terminal

The invention is directed to a communication network wherein a direct tunnel may be formed between a user equipment and a gateway support node, bypassing an intermediate serving support node. If, however, the gateway node should be outside of the actual communication network to which the user equipment is connected, a two-tunnel concept is used wherein a tunnel is provided between the user equipment and the serving support node. Likewise, when receiving a request for Lawful Interception, the tunnel formed between the user equipment and the gateway node is reconfigured to be directed to the serving node for guiding all user traffic and control signaling via this serving node.

Method and device for attaching a user equipment to a telecommunication network

An emergency telephone call is supported and routed to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in an IP based packet switched wireless communications network. An activate PDP context request is sent from a user equipment to the network. A parameter in said activate PDP context request indicates that the PDP context will be used to transfer an emergency call. An activate PDP context accept message is returned from said support node to said user equipment. Said activate PDP context accept message acknowledges said activate PDP context request message and provides the address of a call state control function. A call setup request transferred to the call state control function includes the Service Area Identity (SAI). The call state control function selects a PSAP based, at least in part, on the SAI included in the call setup request and forwards the emergency call to the selected PSAP.

Telephony services in mobile IP networks

A network element, such as a radio network controller, for use in a communication network (e.g. UMTS), the network element being arranged between an end station and an end element, for example an SGSN, wherein connections are established between the end station and the end element via the network element, the network element determining if the connection between the end element and the end station is to be released.

Releasing a connection in a wireless communication network

In conventional cellular systems, the identifier of network elements (SGSN) allocating a temporary identity (TLLI) to a mobile station (MS) can be derived from the identities of the cells they serve. In the future, this assumption may no longer be valid. One paging area could be handled by several network elements, such as SGSN nodes, or one network element could serve many paging areas. When the mobile station changes its paging area, the new supporting network element may have trouble in determining the old supporting network element on the basis of the paging area identifier. It is also possible for two supporting network elements to allocate the same TLLI to two different mobile stations. Therefore the network element (SGSN, BSC, RNC) allocating a temporary identity (TLLI) to a mobile station (MS) should incorporate at least part of its own identifier (NEI) into the temporary identity (TLLI).

Identifying a mobile station in a packet radio network

A method, system and network element for providing an address transition if a connection point at one end of a connection is changed from a first network node to a second network node of a cellular network is provided. An address information and at least one alternative address information are transmitted in a signaling message from the first network node to the second network node. One of the address information and the alternative address information is selected at the second network node and used for re-establishing the connection towards the other end of the connection. Thereby, the new point of connection is allowed to re-establish the connection towards the other end of the connection, even if it can only communicate using one of the two addresses. Furthermore, signaling messages, e.g. messages relating to charging, lawful interception, and/or customized applications, received from different network nodes can be correlated based on the alternative addresses.

In a method for mobile access of a mobile device for a system providing cellular and non-cellular mobile access, the system comprises a serving node, a packet gateway node and the mobile device. The method comprises the steps of negotiating a direct tunneling connection between the mobile device and the packet gateway node by the serving node, wherein the direct tunneling connection is only dedicated to packet switched traffic of the mobile device using the non-cellular mobile access, and establishing the direct tunneling connection between the mobile device and the packet gateway node by the mobile device.

Unlicensed mobile access optimization

Routing packets belonging to different quality of service flows in a packet data network system is described. For each application initiated by a subscriber equipment with an associated quality of service flow in a multi-session connection settings of a network node hosting the application are obtained. From the obtained settings configuration information are determined and packets are routed from the network system to the subscriber equipment for each initiated application in accordance with the configuration information.

Mapping of packets to PDP contexts in multisession connection

A method, system and network element for forwards a terminal identity from a first core network node to a second core network node via a common radio access network. The common radio access network is arranged to incorporate a derived terminal identity received from the first core network node into a signaling message transmitted to the second core network node. The second core network node may then use this terminal identity to address the concerned terminal device.

Forwarding a terminal identity between core network nodes

The invention proposes a system and method for providing a connection in a communication network which comprises several network elements and is adapted to route a connection via a first network element such as a radio network controller and one or more of alternatively selectable second network elements such as serving nodes. The network comprises a network element which stores a list of selectable second network elements. The list is accessed using an identifier identifying a routing or location area or a desired second network element. The list can be stored in a DNS server which returns to an inquiring network element such as a radio network controller, e.g. IP addresses of serving nodes capable of serving a routing or location area of a connection originating or terminating network element. The connection originating or terminating network element may also be adapted to send an identifier identifying a specific network element such as an SGSN to which it desires to be connected.
