A method for forming a character string, an electronic communication device (31) and a charging unit (29) for charging the electronic communication device, wherein the communication device (31) does not comprise at all number/letter keys used for the selection of a phone number. The numbers or letters are selected from a display (39; 41) by means of selecting keys (32-38). The invention can be exploited, for example, in portable mobile phones.

The invention relates to portable mobile communication device. The system according to the invention measures the power transmitted by the mobile communication device and the reflected power returning from the antenna. From these, the system calculates various parameters, for example, the short-term average value, the cumulative sum of transmitted power used during a call and the proportion of power reflected back. The user may set the limit values which he requires for these parameters, and the system will issue an alarm when these are exceeded. If the user so desires, the system may also continuously display the value of a desired quantity. With the aid of the system according to this invention, the user may monitor the benefit of different positions and ways in which the appliance is used and the power consumption of the mobile communication device in different situations, and thus avoid unfavorable operating situations and methods.

The scope of the present invention is the antenna arrangement of a radio communication device (87) intended for establishing a two-way connection, with which arrangement it is striven for to reduce the effects of the body on the properties of an antenna and on the other hand to reduce the radiation of the antenna towards the body. The antenna element (81) is planar and it consists of a ground plane and of a radiator (86) essentially parallel to it. A mobile telephone adaptable to a variety of specialized capabilities comprises a main unit and a plurality of accessory units, each capable of a different specialized function, each being selectively attachable to the main unit. The main unit has a contoured outer surface and an operating system for operation of the mobile telephone and each accessory unit includes a casing having a contoured outer surface containing specialized electronic components. The casing is selectively releasably attachable to the main unit which, when attached to the main unit, generally conforms to the outer surface of the main unit and lies generally within the profile of the main unit when attached to it. Interface contacts on the main unit and on the accessory unit are mutually engageable when the accessory unit is attached to the main unit for electrically interconnecting the specialized electronic components with the operating system. An attachment device is fixed on the outer surface of the casing for releasable attachment to an article of clothing worn by a user. The interface contacts include an antenna interface, an internal data bus, a battery power interface, and a regulated power interface. The accessory units may include an alarm system, a helical antenna with or without a complementary whip antenna, a flat profile antenna with or without a complementary whip antenna, a dual band antenna with or without filtering, a diversity antenna, and an accessory battery module.

An accessory RF unit, used in combination with a hand-held wireless phone, is designed to raise the antenna of the phone above the user's head such that shadowing effects caused by the user's head or body are minimized during phone operation. The accessory RF unit is placed over an existing radiating element of the phone and the communication signals originating in the phone are electromagnetically coupled to an accessory antenna within the accessory RF unit. Similarly, communication signals originating from a base station can be received by the phone. The accessory RF unit is easily attached and removed without the need for additional tools or the removal of an exiting antenna as part of the wireless phone. A coil circumferentially surrounds the phone's antenna for bidirectionally coupling RF energy from and to the accessory antenna.

The invention relates to a method for reducing power consumption in an electronic device which includes a voltage regulator that has a transistor (T1) connected in series as regards the load current. The invention also relates to such a regulator and an electronic device using such a regulator. The base current (Ib) of the series transistor (T1) of the regulator is arranged to have different values according to how big a load current is required of the regulator. For that purpose, the regulator includes an extra intermediate input (Vsx) which switches the base current (Ib) to be conducted through an alternative current path (Re2, D1, T4) when the maximum load current is required.
