The description describes examples for performing reverse link power control in a mobile network having a plurality of first modem devices that receive and transmit signals to wireless access terminals (ATs) and a second device in communication with the plurality of first devices. Execution is transitioned between a first and a second loop to control reverse link power of one of the ATs. The transition is based on a state of a connection. The first control loop executes at one of the first devices and the second loop executes at the second device.

Reverse link power control

This description describes examples of performing reverse link power control in a mobile network having a plurality of first modem devices that receive and transmit signals to wireless access terminals (ATs) and a second device in communication with the plurality of first devices. One of the first devices derives a first power control threshold (PCT) value for reverse link power of one of the access terminals (ATs) and the second device derives a second power control threshold (PCT) value for reverse link power of the one of the ATs. The second power control threshold (PCT) value is transmitted using a data traffic path and either the first PCT value or the second PCT value is selected.

A device causes at least one access terminal that is configured to transmit data to a radio node in a sector of a radio access network to alter transmission. While transmission is altered, the device determines a power of a signal received at the radio node, and updates an average value of signal power using the power measured. A device receives, from one or more access terminals that are configured to receive data from a radio node in a sector of a radio access network, a requested rate at which information should be transmitted to each access terminal, receives from the access terminals information about quality of signals received from the radio node, and generates an event if the requested rate and the information about quality of signals fail to satisfy a condition. An access terminal, located in the vicinity of a first radio node configured to transmit data in a sector of a radio access network, measures signal power of pilot signals received by the access terminal.

Detection of radio frequency interference in wireless communication systems

In a radio access network, the reverse link rate of an access terminal is controlled and stabilized by determining a number of connections in one or more sectors in which the access terminal has a connection and setting a rate limit based on at least one of the determined number of connections. The number of connections can be determined for each sector in which the access terminal has a connection or for some subset of these sectors. If the number of connections is determined for more than one sector, the radio access network may limit the reverse link rate based on the sector having the greatest number of connections.

Reverse link rate and stability control

A method and apparatus is provided for controlling the transmit power of an analog modem when the transmit power level does not match the desired transmit power level, thus conforming to FCC regulations on transmit power and/or eliminating non-linearities associated with higher than required power levels and loss of signal-to-noise ratio and concomitant at loss of data rate if the transmit power levels are less than that desired. In one embodiment, the power level at the analog modem is sensed to ascertain if it is not at the desired transmit power level, with adjustment being provided by transmitting the desired change in the transmit power level to the digital modem, whereupon mapping parameters are redefined by adjusting the number of equivalence classes, thus to adjust transmit power at analog modem.

Method and apparatus for the control of modem transmit power

In a full duplex PCM modem system having an analog and digital modem, a method and apparatus is provided for on-the-fly reconfiguring of analog or digital modem transmitter parameters without switching back to a retrain or startup mode. In one embodiment, the transmitter parameters for the analog modem are modified to take into account channel impairments, in which modified precompensation parameters are sent from the digital modem to the analog modem without switching out of the data mode. In another embodiment, transmit power levels sensed at the analog modem which are non-optimal are adjusted by new parameters sent from the digital modem without having to switch back to the startup mode. In a further embodiment, transmitter parameters in the digital modem are reconfigured to provide more an increased downstream data rate from the digital modem upon sensing improvement in the quality of the downstream channel without switching to the startup mode.

Method and apparatus for providing an automated selection of a telecommunication service from among a plurality of telecommunication services

A system and method for adjusting the phase of the analog signal produced by an analog modem connected to a digital modem over a telephone network. The digital portion of the telephone network is locked to the network clock, and the modems have no control over the sampling timing or rate as the analog signal is sampled and quantized by a codec. If the analog signal is shifted in phase relative to the network clock, then the codec may be sampling at unresolvable points on the analog signal, thereby causing errors and a decrease in the usable bandwidth for transmitting data. The analog modem symbol frequency is locked to the clock of the digital network using loop-back timing. A phase estimate is computed using the quantized samples of a known reference signal. Next, a &ldquo;phase offset&rdquo; is calculated by comparing the phase estimate to an optimum phase value. Then the digital modem sends the calculated phase offset information to the analog modem. The analog modem then delays its transmitted signal by the phase offset. After the phase of the analog modem's transmitter is adjusted, the analog signal reaches the codec at the phase desired by the digital modem.

System and method for sampling phase adjustment by an analog modem

PCM modem adaptation system utilizing a silence period

A method and apparatus for achieving the fastest possible data transmission rate, symmetric, near symmetric, or a specific data transmission rate between multiple analog modems. The invention comprises a multimedia unit comprising of two (or more) digital modems and a controller section. The controller provides the interface between the two (or more) digital modems. When a user attempts to send data from a first analog modem to a second analog modem, the user calls the first digital modem in the network. Next, the first digital modem establishes a connection with the second digital modem through the controller section which is partitioned in two segments. Controller segments may be co-located or located in different locations and connected through either Internet or PSTN. Then, the second digital modem dials up the second analog modem under direction of the controller. Subsequently, the controller commands the digital modems to establish a connection at the fastest possible symmetric rate, near-symmetric, or any other pre-configured rate. Last, the controller bridges traffic between the digital modems and enables the two analog modems to communicate transparently.

High speed dial-up service using PCM modem technology

A system and method for shifting the relative phases of a PCM data frame and a network RBS frame by one or more symbols is disclosed. The method includes determining whether or not RBS is present. If RBS is present, the slots affected by RBS are identified. Next it is determined what data slots, if any, are affected by encoding. The PCM data frame is shifted so the RBS constraint and the encoding constraint do not coincide at any particular data slot. For one particular PCM upstream modulation scheme, the digital modem adjusts the relative phases of the data-mode frame and network RBS frame such that a minimum number of trellis-modified symbols fall on network RBS affected slots. This information is transmitted to an analog modem. The amount of shift can be conveyed to an analog modem in the same data sequence used to send upstream constellation sets and mapping parameters during an initial training sequence. The present invention improves the performance of any PCM modem that employs a data frame structure in which not all symbols are subject to the same constraints, for example, due to trellis coding.
