A power transmission apparatus of a hybrid electric vehicle, may include an engine and first and second motor/generator, the power transmission apparatus includes a planetary gear set including first, second, and third rotation elements, a first shaft fixedly connected to the first rotation element and a rotor of the first motor/generator, a second shaft fixedly connected to the second rotation element and the engine, a third shaft fixedly connected to the third rotation element, a fourth shaft externally meshed with the second shaft and the third shaft, a fifth shaft fixedly connected to a rotor of the second motor/generator, a sixth shaft externally meshed with the fourth shaft and the fifth shaft and transmitting rotational power of the engine and the first and second motor/generators to a final reduction gear of a differential gear and three gear trains externally engaged with the first to sixth shafts.

A transmission for a vehicle may include first and second input shafts, first and second shifting output units, a reverse speed idle unit and an electric driving force unit. Each input shaft may include a plurality of input gears having different numbers of gear teeth. The second input shaft may be hollow and disposed at a front side of the first input shaft without any rotational interference with the first input shaft. Each shifting output unit may include an output shaft, shift rotational driving force transferred through shifting gears selectively outer-engaging with corresponding input gears by a synchronizing unit and output the shifted rotational driving force through an output gear. The reverse speed idle unit may regulate reverse speed shifting. The electric driving force unit may selectively transfer rotational driving force of a motor/generator to the first input shaft or the second shifting output unit.

A planetary gear set is disposed on a line from the input shaft and an output shaft transmits torque from the planetary gear set and the second motor/generator to driving wheels. An HEV mode 1 in which an operation of a first brake and a second brake is released or an HEV mode 2 in which an operation of the second brake is operated is converted based on a mechanical maximum efficiency range, a required power of the engine, a speed ratio of a transmission, and an SOC of the battery.
