A flat panel display with improved adhesion of the anode to the second substrate is disclosed. The adhesion of the anode to the second substrate is reinforced to prevent damage to the anode at the spacer formation area and to stably adhere the phosphor layer to the anode. The flat panel display comprises first and second substrates each facing each other and separated from each other by a distance. An electron emission unit is formed on the first substrate. A plurality of phosphor layers are formed on the second substrate. An anode is formed on the second substrate covering the phosphor layers and the non-light emitting regions between the phosphor layers. In the non-light emitting regions, the anode is placed on the second substrate without leaving a gap between the anode and the second substrate.

In a method of manufacturing an electron emission device, cathode electrodes are first formed on a substrate. An insulating layer is formed on the entire surface of the substrate such that the insulating layer covers the cathode electrodes. The insulating layer is wet-etched two or more times such that openings each with an aspect ratio of more than 1 are formed in the insulating layer. Gate electrodes are formed on the insulating layer. Electron emission regions are formed on the cathode electrodes within the openings of the insulating layer. The respective etchings are conducted using separate mask patterns with the same-sized openings such that under-cuts are made.

An electron emission device with conductive layers for preventing accumulation of static charges on an insulating layer of the device is shown that does not require an independent driving circuit. The device includes cathode electrodes formed on a substrate and separated from gate electrodes by an insulating layer formed over the cathode electrodes, all inside a partial vacuum chamber. Crossings of cathode and gate electrodes form the display areas while in the non-display areas of the insulating layer, that are susceptible to accumulation of electrostatic charge, conductive layers are formed parallel to the cathode or gate electrodes, for the most part separated from these electrodes by the insulating layer. Outside the device chamber, the conductive layers are electrically coupled to their corresponding electrodes. Conductive layers thus formed and coupled discharge accumulated static charge over the insulating layers inside the device to the outside circuit.

An electron emission display device is capable of focusing electrons emitted from an electron emission region by using small gate holes formed on a thick insulating layer. The electron emission device includes a substrate, a cathode electrode formed on the substrate, a insulating layer formed on the cathode electrode, a gate electrode formed on the insulating layer, and the electron emission region formed on the cathode electrode. In the electron emission device, the insulating layer is provided with a first insulating layer and at least one second insulating layer formed partly on the first insulating layer, and the gate electrode has a stepped portion along a surface of the insulating layer and an inclined portion to connect upper and lower end portions of the stepped portion. As such, with above-structured electron emission device, the inclined portion of the gate electrode formed at the periphery of the gate hole can focus the electrons emitted from the electron emission portion so that the contrast and the coloration are enhanced to realize high definition images without a separate or distinct focusing electrode (e.g., a grid electrode, a grid plate, etc.).

An electron emission device, and an electron emission display using the electron emission device, includes a substrate, electron emission regions formed on the substrate, driving electrodes formed on the substrate to control electron emissions of the electron emission regions, and a focusing electrode disposed above the driving electrodes and insulated from the driving electrodes, the focusing electrode having openings through which electron beams pass. The focusing electrode includes at least two focusing parts electrically separated from each other and the focusing parts focus the electron beams in different directions.

An electron emission device having various functional electrodes in addition to the electrodes serving to emit electrons includes: first and second substrates facing each other, and cathode and gate electrodes arranged on the first substrate within an effective electron emission area and including an insulating layer interposed therebetween.
