This application discloses a Load-UnLoad (LUL) hard disk drive comprising a disk base, a spindle motor mounted on the disk base for rotating at least one disk to create at least one rotating disk surface, and a head stack assembly pivotably coupled to the disk base and configured to engage an actuator latch when the sliders of the head stack assembly are to be parked. The actuator latch includes a latch beam coupled through a latch pivot to the disk base and a boss coupled to the latch beam and configured to limit the stroke of latch motion in the event of a rotary non-operational shock.

This application discloses a hard disk drive comprising a arm limiter mounted on a disk base to limit movement of the actuator arms during a non-operational shock event while parked. The arm limiter and disk base are disclosed in various combinations to limit actuator arm movement during non-operational shocks.

Arm limiting shock movement

A disk hard disk drive that includes a spindle motor and an actuator arm coupled to a base plate. A plurality of disks are coupled to the spindle motor and a plurality of heads are coupled to the actuator arm and the disks. The drive also includes a cover attached to the base plate. The cover and base plate enclose a hard disk area that has a horizontal center line. The hard disk area includes a volume of air above the horizontal center line that is equal to a volume of air below the horizontal center line. The air space within the hard disk area is equal and symmetrical in a vertical direction. Such an arrangement reduces track mis-registration when servo is copied from a disk surface to the other surfaces of the disks in the drive.

Equalization and minimization of multi-head stack assembly's motion during self servo writing and HDD operation

A hard disk drive with a voice coil motor coupled to a head. The head moves relative to a disk. The voice coil motor receives a biasing voltage and has a back emf voltage. A test circuit is coupled to the voice coil motor to determine the back emf voltage. The back emf voltage can be used to analyze low frequency vibration in the disk drive. The test circuit can be constructed so that the back emf voltage is proportional to a pair of test resistors and/or a pair of test inductors. The biasing voltage allows the back emf voltage to be measured and analyzed while the head is at any location from the ID to the OD of the disk.

The invention provides a variety of dampening mechanisms and a method of dampening to alleviate these problems in single disk storage devices. This includes disk drives of at most 13 millimeters in height.
