A system and method is provided for providing an initial determination of the type of application recognition processing that is required for incoming traffic, and directing the packets accordingly. The invention is based on optimized resource allocation that uses multiple, application-dependent data paths. An exemplary set of application-dependent data paths includes, for example, Fixed Attribute Table (FAT), Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and CPU Processing data paths. By using optimized and application-dependent network traffic processing paths, it is possible to achieve a less resource-hungry hardware design than previously contemplated in the prior art, where all traffic proceeded along a single path and was subjected to DPI processing.

Efficient application recognition in network traffic

Aspects of the disclosure pertain to methods and systems that are configured to monitor data usage at a network edge. In an implementation, a method includes monitoring data usage information associated with a mobile user session between a mobile device and a plurality of edges nodes of a communication network, where the plurality of edge nodes includes at least a beginning edge node and a final edge node. The method also includes storing data usage information from the monitored data usage information, the stored data usage information including data associated with the transfer of cached data stored at the plurality of edge nodes. The method further includes forwarding the stored data access information to a central database of the communication network.

An apparatus for transporting data in a network-based data communication system includes a first network node comprising a first port couplable to at least a second network node for transferring data in a first format between the first and second network nodes. The first network node further includes a processor operatively coupled to the first port, the processor being configurable to receive one or more frames of data and/or transmit one or more frames of data, the frames of data having an overhead processing portion that is otherwise standard. The processor uses only a subset of the overhead processing portion and is configured such that utilizing only the subset of the overhead processing portion of the one or more data frames enables one or more functional blocks to be eliminated from the first network node, the one or more functional blocks being otherwise required for implementing substantially all of the overhead processing portion of the one or more data frames.
