The present invention provides a method of preparing a hyperbranched organic modifier which comprises reacting (a) a tertiary amine compound having at least two terminal hydroxyl groups with (b) at least one multifunctional monomer having at least two terminal functional groups capable of reacting with said hydroxyl groups. A flame retardant thermoplastic resin composition comprises 100 parts by weight of a rubber-modified aromatic vinyl copolymer resin (A) and about 10 to about 30 parts by weight of a brominated diphenyl ethane mixture (B) including about 55 to about 85% by weight of hexabromodiphenyl ethane. The rubber modified aromatic vinyl copolymer resin (A) according to the present invention is a polymer resin wherein grafted rubbery polymers are dispersed in the form of particles in a matrix of vinyl copolymer. The rubber-modified aromatic vinyl copolymer resin (A) includes grafted rubbery polymers in an amount of about 10 to about 100% by weight and the matrix of vinyl copolymer in an amount of about 0 to about 90% by weight. The brominated diphenyl ethane mixture (B) may have about 1 to about 25% by weight of diphenyl ethane having an odd number of bromine substituents.

Disclosed herein is a method for evaluating scratch resistance of a plastic resin comprising scratching a surface of a test sample of plastic resin using a scratch apparatus to form a scratch of the surface having a scratch profile; scanning the scratched test sample with a surface profile analysis apparatus to measure the scratch profile; and creating a scratch resistance evaluation index based on the measured scratch profile to evaluate the scratch resistance of the test sample. The method has good reliability and reproducibility, reduces measurement time and errors caused by measurers and measuring conditions, provides easy measurement and can be widely applied to all plastic resins.

A thermoplastic resin composition that can have improved flowability of the present invention comprises (A) about 1 to about 98% by weight of a functional group-containing vinyl copolymer resin reactive with polyester; (B) about 1 to about 98% by weight of an aromatic vinyl graft copolymer resin; (C) about 1 to about 98% by weight of a polyester resin; and (D) about 0.5 to about 30 parts by weight of a bromodiphenyl ethane mixture, based on the total weight of a base resin comprising (A), (B) and (C). The resin composition of the present invention can have flame retardancy, excellent impact resistance, and improved flowablity.

A brominated diphenyl ethane mixture of the present invention comprises about 0 to about 2% by weight of pentabromodiphenyl ethane, about 55 to 85% by weight of hexabromodiphenyl ethane, about 1 to 20% by weight of heptabromodiphenyl ethane, about 1 to 25% by weight of octabromodiphenyl ethane, about 0 to about 10% by weight of nonabromodiphenyl ethane, and about 0 to about 5% by weight of decabromodephenyl ethane. The brominated diphenyl ethane mixture can be added to thermoplastic resin as a flame retardant, can exhibit excellent compatibility with thermoplastic resins, can minimize the generation of environmental problems, and can obtain excellent impact resistance, thermal stability, weatherability and flowability as well as improved flame resistance.
