An automated mechanism for measuring the amount of accuracy loss attributable to reverse engineering processes that use 3D scan data is discussed. The embodiments provide a mechanism that displays to a user the effect scan data editing and CAD remodeling operations have on scan data accuracy. Additionally, the user can choose the way the graphical display illustrates the error distribution on the model such as by color mapping and whisker mapping. The accuracy loss may be displayed to the user after finishing an editing/modeling command or during the previewing of the command thereby allowing a user to take appropriate action. Parameters may also be adjusted programmatically based on the amount of accuracy loss determined to be attributable to scan data editing or CAD remodeling operations.

System and method for analyzing modeling accuracy while performing reverse engineering with 3D scan data

Programmatic extraction and management of solid and surface modeling parameters from raw 3D scan data is discussed. An automated process reads raw 3D scan data and works in communication with a CAD system able to perform CAD part modeling. The user is provided with an automatic function to segment a mesh model (formed from the raw 3D scan data) into dozens of mesh regions. A graphical user interface is provided which enables a user to choose a type of the design intent along with the mesh regions from which the design intent is calculated. Each design intent is represented in a vector, a plane or a poly-line depending upon the type of design intent. In response to a user demand for the parameters of a modeling feature, a best approximation of the requested parameter value is calculated by processing the raw 3D scan data using a set of functions.

System and method for identifying original design intents using 3D scan data

An automated mechanism that identifies and defines a global coordinate system that is most appropriate for a collection of raw 3D scan data used to form a mesh model is discussed. More specifically, a coordinate system is identified that is able to minimize the total sum of deviation error while also minimizing the peak error for raw 3D scan data. The present invention searches for appropriate coordinate systems from raw 3D scan data in a fully automated way. Multiple coordinate systems in order of likelihood of leading to minimal global deviation error are identified and presented to a user. End users are also allowed to edit suggested coordinate system parameters interactively prior to the alignment of the 3D scan data being transformed based on a selected coordinate system.

System and method for automatic 3D scan data alignment

A mechanism for enabling a user to treat 3D scan data model regions as surface bodies so as to eliminate the need to convert model regions to parametric surfaces as a prerequisite to performing part body modeling operations is discussed. During CAD re-modeling raw 3D scan data is imported. The present invention allows a user to use a region directly as an input argument for a part body modeling operation as long as a sheet body (surface body) is applicable as a modeling input argument. Additionally, if any regions used in the body modeling are modified by the user, surfaces which have been generated from fitting regions are also recalculated and the body model is updated automatically. The region modification can happen when the user includes more scan data in the region, excludes scan data from the region, smoothes geometry, or uses other editing functions.
