A positive electrode active material includes a nickel-containing lithium transition metal oxide containing nickel in an amount of 60 mol % or more based on a total number of moles of transition metals excluding lithium, and a lithium-containing inorganic compound layer formed on a surface of the nickel-containing lithium transition metal oxide, wherein the positive electrode active material has a first peak in a range of 5 eV or less, a second peak in a range of 7 eV to 13 eV, and a third peak in a range of 20 eV to 30 eV when intensity is measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the first peak has a maximum value of 80% to 120% with respect to the third peak. A method of preparing the positive electrode active material, and a positive electrode and a lithium secondary battery are also provided.

Provided is a lithium secondary battery which includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an electrolyte, wherein the positive electrode includes, as a positive electrode active material, a lithium composite transition metal oxide powder having a layered structure and a nickel content accounting for 50 atm % to 75 atm % of total transition metals, and wherein the lithium composite transition metal oxide powder undergoes a 3% or less change in lithium-oxygen (Li—O) interlayer spacing (i.e., LiOslab thickness) in a state-of-charge (SOC) range of 58% to 86%.

The present disclosure provides a novel composite transition metal oxide-based precursor, a preparing method thereof, and a cathode active material for a secondary battery prepared from the precursor. In the present disclosure, it is possible to enhance productivity and economic efficiency due to a high reaction yield during the synthesis of a cathode active material and to enhance the initial discharge capacity and lifespan characteristics of a secondary battery including a cathode active material by using an oxide-based precursor having a high oxygen fraction instead of a hydroxide-based precursor used as a precursor of a cathode active material in the related art.
