A compressor aerofoil rotor blade for a turbine engine includes: a root portion spaced apart from a tip portion by a main body portion. The main body portion is defined by a suction surface wall having a suction surface and a pressure surface wall having a pressure surface. The suction surface wall and the pressure surface wall meet at a leading edge and a trailing edge. The tip portion comprises a shoulder provided on the pressure surface wall. A tip wall extends from the aerofoil leading edge to the aerofoil trailing edge. A transition region of the pressure surface wall tapers from the shoulder in a direction towards the tip wall. The tip wall includes a squealer defined by a first tip wall region which extends from the trailing edge to a winglet.

Compressor aerofoil

A controller operates to control a gas turbine engine which has a first variable guide vane axially spaced apart from a compressor blade array and is rotatably mounted at a first location on a casing, having a vane axis of rotation at right angles to an operational axis. An adjustment drive is operable to rotate the first variable guide vane about its axis of rotation to a range of angles relative to the operational axis. The controller is operable to control the rotation of the first variable guide vane in dependence of engine shaft speed, wherein over a first range of engine shaft speed the angle of the first variable guide vane relative to the operational axis decreases with increasing engine speed, and over a second range of engine shaft speeds, the angle of the first variable guide vane relative to the operational axis increases with increasing engine speed.

Compressor control

A compressor aerofoil for a turbine engine includes a tip portion with a tip wall which extends from the aerofoil leading edge to the aerofoil trailing edge. The tip wall defines a squealer which extends between the leading edge the trailing edge. A shoulder is provided on one of the suction surface wall or pressure surface wall which extends between the leading edge and the trailing. A transition region tapers from the shoulder in a direction towards the tip wall. The other of the suction surface wall or pressure surface wall extends towards the tip wall.

A computer implemented method for the prediction of the surge point of a compressor includes: generating a plurality of meshes: a compressor inlet mesh, at least a compressor rotor stage mesh, and a compressor outlet mesh, representing a plurality of exit guide vanes and an exit nozzle and extending up to a final nozzle exit area; assembling the plurality of meshes to obtain the CFD domain; specifying boundary conditions of the computational domain; specifying atmospheric pressure conditions at the final nozzle exit area; computing compressor inlet mass flow rate and compressor pressure ratio; checking if the numerical stability limit is not reached, as a result of the numerical stability limit not being reached: decreasing dimensions of the final nozzle exit area; generating again the compressor outlet mesh; repeating the steps of specifying atmospheric pressure at the final nozzle exit area, the step of computing, and the step of checking.

Method for the prediction of surge in a gas compressor

A technique for controlling a rotating stall in a compressor of a gas turbine engine. In the technique a flow injection is introduced into an axial air flow path of the compressor via a flow-injection opening located at a pressure side of a guide vane in the compressor and directed towards a leading edge of a compressor rotor blade located adjacently downstream of the guide vane. The flow injection is introduced when the rotating stall is detected and/or when the compressor is being operated at a speed lower than full load speed. The flow injection reduces an angle of incidence of compressor air on the leading edge of the downstream rotor blade and hence the rotor sees a more favorable velocity. The favorable velocity results into an increase in the operating range of the rotor and hence of the compressor by mitigating and/or reducing the rotating stalls.

Technique for controlling rotating stall in compressor for a gas turbine engine

A compressor aerofoil for a turbine engine includes a root portion spaced apart from a tip portion by a main body portion. The main body portion is defined by a suction surface wall having a suction surface, and a pressure surface wall having a pressure surface. The suction surface wall and the pressure surface wall meet at a leading edge and a trailing edge. The tip portion has a tip wall which extends from the aerofoil leading edge to the aerofoil trailing edge. The tip wall defines a squealer having: a first tip wall region which extends from the leading edge; a second tip wall region which extends from the trailing edge; and a third tip wall region which extends between the first tip wall region and the second tip wall region.

Computer implemented method for prediction of performances of a compressor includes modelling a CFD gas path, modelling vanes and blades as non-adiabatic solids, building a model of the rotor including at least a first rotor solid domain facing a plurality of vanes non-adiabatic solids and at least a second plurality of rotor solid domains attached to a plurality of blades non-adiabatic solids, building a model of the stator including at least a first casing solid domain attached to a plurality of vanes non-adiabatic solids and at least a second casing solid domain facing a plurality of blades non-adiabatic solids, modelling one or more solid rotor interfaces, each solid rotor interface providing an heat exchange link between a respective pair of adjacent rotor solid domains, and modelling one or more solid stator interfaces, each solid rotor interface providing an heat exchange link between a respective pair of adjacent stator solid domains.

Method for the prediction of turbomachine performances

A compressor aerofoil for a turbine engine, having a suction surface wall and a pressure surface wall meeting at a leading edge and trailing edge, a tip plate extends between the walls and has a first and a second tip rib extending therefrom. At least one of the first and second tip rib has a height extending from the tip plate. A camber line is defined as passing through the leading and trailing edge and the camber line length is from the leading to trailing edge along the tip plate. The first and second tip rib define a slot along the camber line of the aerofoil. The first tip rib is located a distance Lfrom the leading towards the trailing edge and the second tip rib is located a distance Lfrom the leading edge, the distances Land Lgreater than 1% of the camber line length.
