Techniques for modifying packet filters in a wireless communication network are described. In one scheme, packet filters may be performed with multiple operations, if needed. The operation(s) to be performed and the order of performing the operation(s) may be dependent on the number of existing packet filters to be replaced (N) and the number of new packet filters (M). If N=M, then N packet filters in a traffic filter template may be replaced with a single operation. If N&#x3e;M, then M packet filters in the traffic filter template may be replaced first, and N&#x2212;M packet filters may be deleted from the traffic filter template next. If N&#x3c;M, then M&#x2212;N new packet filters may be added to the traffic filter template first, and N packet filters in the traffic filter template may be replaced next. In another scheme, packet filters are modified with a single operation using dummy packet filters, if needed.

Methods and apparatus are presented for extending the protocol synchronization period between a PPP client and a PPP server, wherein the PPP server is located on a wireless communication device. In one aspect, the PPP server generates and sends an IPCP Configure-Nak message to the PPP client whenever the PPP client sends an IPCP Configure-Request message, wherein an arbitrary non-zero value is deliberately sent as the primary DNS address, the secondary DNS address, the primary WINS address, or the secondary WINS address is sent in the IPCP Configure-Nak message. The IP address is deliberately omitted from the IPCP Configure-Nak message.

A cross point switch is configured to select from one of a first stream of ATM cells and a second stream of ATM cells, the first stream and the second stream being identical, and is further configured to select and substitute the second stream for the first stream upon detection of an error condition in the working circuitry operation on the first stream. The working circuitry, which is located on an interface module, is configured to receive and operate on the first stream of ATM cells. The protection circuitry, which is located on a redundant interface module, is configured to receive and operate on the second stream of cells. The protection circuitry and the working circuitry are functionally identical and synchronized to each other so that switching occurs from one stream to the other without interruption of network service.

Method and apparatus to provide facility and module redundancy in telecommunication switching equipment

Methods and apparatus are provided for use in an ATM network that allow several devices to access a limited number of device interface ports in a ATM switch fabric, by providing flexible assignment of the limited ports. The methods and apparatus are dynamically configurable to permit port assignments to be changed on the fly, without interfering with existing communications. In certain embodiments a programmable M&times;N cross point switch is provided between M number of devices and a N&times;N ATM switch matrix. The cross point switch allows two or more devices to switchably access one or more of the device interface ports in the ATM switch matrix. The assignment of devices to device interface ports can be initiated manually or automatically by local and/or external control processes/devices.
