A surge arrester includes a polymer body including a first leg having a first channel defined therein and a second leg perpendicular to the first leg and having a second channel defined therein. A varistor assembly is in the first channel. The varistor assembly includes a plurality of varistor elements electrically connected in series and forming a stack of the plurality of varistor elements. The stack has a first end surface, a second end surface, and an outer side surface extending between the first end surface and the second end surface. The varistor assembly includes a first end fitting at the first end surface of the stack, a second end fitting at the second end surface of the stack, a plurality of rods disposed around the side surface of the stack, and a polymer fill layer between the side surface of the stack and the first leg of the body.

Surge arresters and related assemblies and methods

The present disclosure describes an assembly adapted for mitigating dry band arcing on power distribution line insulators. The assembly includes a polymeric insulator for power distribution line having a core, two end fittings affixed to opposing ends of the core, and a housing circumferentially surrounding the core. The housing including an upper end section and a lower end section each overlapping a respective end fitting, and a series of axially spaced apart annular sheds projecting radially outwardly from an outer surface of the housing. The device further includes a cover having a main body including a sidewall and a top wall, the sidewall and the top wall together define a cavity. A lower edge of the sidewall defines a lower opening and the top wall includes an upper opening, both the lower and upper openings being in communication with the cavity. At least a portion of the upper end section of the housing is received through the upper opening of the cover and one or more of the annular sheds are received within the cavity of the cover. Methods of mitigating dry band arcing on power distribution line insulators are also described.

Embodiments of the invention are directed to a method for manufacturing a composite polymer insulator. The method includes: providing an elongate core having a core axis, the core including a first core main section, a second core main section, and a core midsection axially interposed between the first and second core main sections; and mounting a joint sleeve around the core midsection. The method further includes molding a polymeric first housing onto the core such that: the first housing surrounds the first core main section; and a joint section the first housing overlaps and bonds to the joint sleeve. The method further includes molding a polymeric second housing onto the core such that: the second housing surrounds the second core main section; and a joint section of the second housing overlaps and bonds to the joint sleeve.

A surge arrester includes a polymer body or housing and a varistor assembly in the body or housing. The varistor assembly includes a plurality of varistor elements and a fuse electrically connected in series and forming a vertical stack of the plurality of varistor elements and the fuse. The stack has a first end surface, a second end surface, and a side surface extending between the first end surface and the second end surface. The varistor assembly includes a first end fitting at the first end surface of the stack and a second end fitting at the second end surface of the stack.

An insulator system includes an insulator assembly including: a first insulator; a second insulator; a first end fitting at a first end portion of the first insulator; a second end fitting at a second end portion of the first insulator; a third end fitting at a first end portion of the second insulator and operatively coupled to the second end fitting; a fourth end fitting at a second end portion of the second insulator; a first cement layer between the first insulator and the first end fitting; a second cement layer between the first insulator and the second end fitting; a third cement layer between the second insulator and the third end fitting; and a fourth cement layer between the second insulator and the fourth end fitting. An electrically insulating layer is on the first cement layer and extends between the first insulator and the first end fitting.

Described herein is a protective cover assembly for an electrical cable mounted on an insulator. The assembly includes an insulator cover including a cover body covering the electrical cable and the insulator and an electrically conductive arc diverter. The arc diverter is elongated in an axial direction that is parallel to a center axis of the electrical cable and is attached to an outer surface of the electrical cable at a portion of the electrical cable that is covered by the insulator cover such that a portion of the arc diverter is positioned below and covered by the insulator cover and another portion of the arc diverter extends past a terminal end of the insulator cover with an end of the arc diverter being spaced apart from the terminal end of the insulator cover in the axial direction.

An assembly for use with an oil-filled cable termination includes a cable gland, a cable received in the cable gland, and a stress cone received around the cable and spaced apart from the cable gland. The cable includes a central conductor and a polymeric insulation layer surrounding the central conductor. A lug is spaced apart from the stress cone and includes a barrel portion with the central conductor of the cable received in the barrel portion. An oil barrier system including an oil barrier layer surrounds the polymeric insulation layer of the cable between the stress cone and the lug.

The electrical insulator includes a first surface, a second surface that is opposite the first surface, a first edge that is between the first surface and the second surface, an intersection between the first edge and the first and second surfaces defining outer edges of the first and second surfaces, respectively, and a second edge that is opposite the first edge and that is between the first surface and the second surface, an intersection between the second edge and the first and second surfaces defining interior edges of the first and second surfaces, respectively. The apparatus further includes an electrical conductor that is arranged on the first surface of the electrical insulator and is spaced apart from the second edge.

A connector assembly for use with a mining cable coupler includes a first connector and a second connector. The first connector includes a front portion including a plug and a rear portion including a barrel configured to receive a first conductor. An apparatus includes an electrical insulator including an electrically insulating material without a conductive material. Apparatus for electric stress grading with wildlife guard for electrical power distribution equipment
