A method and apparatus for handoff of a wireless client from a first network device to a second network device in a wired network are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving data from a new wireless client at the second network device and transmitting a request for a route update for the new wireless client to the wired network. Prior to network convergence for the route update, data traffic for the new wireless client is received from the first network device and forwarded to the new wireless client. Context information for the new wireless client is transmitted from the second network device to other network devices in a proximity group of the second network device.

Fast handoff for wireless devices in a wired-wireless network

Bridge domain communication methods and devices are presented for efficiently communicating information in a bridge domain based upon group indications and source indications. Packets with a source and destination indication are received. A bridge domain communication process is performed at the bridge level wherein a packet is selected for forwarding based upon a source and group indication. For example, a determination is made if a particular bridge domain corresponds to the group destination indication in the received packet. The source indication in the packet is compared with a tracked source designation indication. Output ports associated with the tracked source designation indication are identified if the tracked source designation indication matches the received source indication. The communication packet is forwarded on identified ports.

Source specific multicast layer 2 networking device and method

In one embodiment, a method for processing encrypted wireless station data at a network device includes receiving from an access point, one or more frames comprising wireless station data fragmented into a plurality of encrypted protocol data units. The frames are configured to identify the encrypted protocol units associated with the wireless station data. The method further includes decrypting the encrypted protocol data units and forwarding the wireless station data. An apparatus for processing encrypted wireless station data, a method for transmitting encrypted multicast data for a wireless client, and a method for processing encrypted wireless station data at an access point are also disclosed.

Efficient data path encapsulation between access point and access switch

A method, system, computer program product and apparatus are presented to enable a L2 network device, such as a bridge or switch, to control the flow of a multicast data stream to a connected router in response to control messages received from the router by the L2 network device. By controlling the flow of multicast data streams in this manner, there will be a corresponding reduction in wasted bandwidth due to unnecessary transmission of these multicast data streams and a reduction in processing overhead by the router due to analysis and dropping of unnecessary multicast frames. In one aspect of the present invention, the router can generate the control messages in response to receiving a data frame in a multicast data stream from the L2 network device. The router can determine whether a subscriber to that multicast data stream is connected downstream of the router and then transmit an appropriate control message to the upstream L2 network device, indicating whether the router does or does not have a downstream subscriber. In response to such a control message, the L2 network device can cease transmitting the multicast data stream to the router, if appropriate.

Constraining multicast traffic between a layer 2 network device and a router

Data transmission across a computer network is disclosed, comprising creating a plurality of tunnels across a computer network to connect a first computer to a second computer, the plurality of tunnels including a tunnel for each link in a link aggregation of a plurality of transmission protocols, connecting a first computer at a first site with a second computer at a second site, the connection made via the computer network, and transmitting packets end-to-end from the first computer to the second computer in a manner characterized that the computer network preserves a connection from the first computer to the second computer without terminating the connection at the inbound edge of the computer network, the packets conforming to protocols in the plurality of transmission protocols.
