Apparatus for radio frequency signals and method of manufacturing such apparatus

An electrically controllable RF circuit that includes an EC cell and an EAP-based actuator configured to produce relative movement of an electrode of the electrochromic cell and an electrically conducting patch or another electrode electromagnetically coupled thereto. In one embodiment, the RF circuit operates as a tunable patch antenna whose frequency characteristics can be changed by changing the bias voltages applied to the EC cell and EAP-based actuator. Advantageously, the capability to tune the antenna using two different tuning mechanisms (i.e., a dielectric-permittivity based tuning mechanism implemented using the EC cell and a geometry-based tuning mechanism implemented using the EAP-based actuator) provides more degrees of control over the pertinent antenna characteristics compared to what is available in some other antenna designs. In another embodiment, the RF circuit can operate as a tunable RF filter whose frequency characteristics can similarly be changed using these two different tuning mechanisms.

Tunable radio-frequency device having electrochromic and electro-active materials

A radio-frequency switching apparatus that can be used to turn a signal path on or off or to attenuate a radio-frequency signal. The switching apparatus comprises at least one radio-frequency input, at least one radio-frequency output, at least one transmission line providing a signal path between the at least one radio-frequency input and the at least one radio-frequency output, and at least one transition metal oxide portion. The radio-frequency switching apparatus also comprises direct current blocking means electrically coupled between the at least one transition metal portion and the at least one radio-frequency input. The radio-frequency switching apparatus also comprises biasing means for providing a bias across the at least one transition metal oxide portion such that power transferred between the radio-frequency input and the radio-frequency output is controlled by controlling the bias level across the at least one transition metal oxide portion.

Radio-frequency switching apparatus

An electrically controllable RF-circuit element that includes at least one layer of an electrochromic material sandwiched between two corresponding layers of a solid-electrolyte material and placed adjacent and along a length of RF transmission line. In one example embodiment, the electrically controllable RF-circuit element operates as a tunable band-stop (e.g., notch) filter whose stop band can be spectrally moved by changing one or more dc-bias voltages applied across the corresponding layer stack(s). In another example embodiment, the electrically controllable RF-circuit element operates as a tunable phase shifter whose phase-shifting characteristics can be changed by changing one or more dc-bias voltages applied across the corresponding layer stack(s).

Electrically tunable radio-frequency components and circuits

A resonator assembly and method are disclosed. The resonator assembly comprises: a resonant chamber defined by a first wall, a second wall opposing the first wall and side walls extending between the first wall and the second wall; a first resonator comprising a first resonator element and a first resonator cap, the first resonator element having a first grounded end and an first open end, the first resonator element being grounded at the first grounded end on the first wall and extending into the resonant chamber, the first resonator cap having a first grounded portion and an first open portion, the first resonator cap being grounded at the first grounded portion on the second wall and extending into the resonant chamber to at least partially surround the first open end of the first resonator element with the first open portion for electrical field loading of the first resonator element by the first resonator cap; and a second resonator comprising a second resonator element and a second resonator cap located for electrical field loading of the second resonator element by the second resonator cap, the second resonator element being located for magnetic field coupling between the first resonator element and the second resonator element. In this way, a compact resonator assembly is provided having high operational performance. The provision of resonators having resonator elements and resonator caps helps to reduce the height of the resonator assembly to around one eighth of the operating wavelength. The provision of the resonator caps helps to contain the electrical field from the resonator elements, which enables adjacent resonator elements to be located closer together to provide for enhanced magnetic field coupling therebetween.
