An electronic device includes one or more processors and a display that is flexible. A louvered filter, which can be optionally configured in an electronic device attachment, as a first louvered filter and a second louvered filter, or otherwise, is then disposed along the flexible display. When the flexible display is deformed by one or more bends, the one or more processors can present a first image through a first portion of the louvered filter and a second image through a second portion of the louvered filter to present stereoscopic content without the need of special glasses.

A display device includes a liquid crystal display operable to selectively transmit light. The display device also includes a switchable mirror that is operable to switch from a pellucid state to a reflective state. The liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal layer disposed between a first substrate and a second substrate. To preserve color integrity, a color filter and a switchable mirror is also disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate.

Hybrid liquid crystal display

An apparatus can include a display backlight light source configured to emit light. The apparatus can include an infrared and visible light conversion layer optically coupled to the display backlight light source. The infrared and visible light conversion layer can convert light from the display backlight light source to infrared light and at least some visible light to emit the infrared light along with the at least some visible light. The apparatus can include an optical shutter layer optically coupled to the display backlight light source. The optical shutter layer can include a plurality of optical pixel shutters that shutter light from the backlight light source.

Apparatus with visible and infrared light emitting display

A device () includes a display () that is suitable for use under widely ranging lighting conditions. The display includes separately operable transmissive light modulator subpixels () that can be provided in at least three colors to provide a full color display but also includes separately operable reflective light modulator subpixels () that provide basic readability when light levels are so high (e.g., bright summer day) that the image presented by the transmissive light modulators would be difficult to discern. The reflective light modulators may be provided with in-pixel memory () so as to reduce the energy cost of providing always-on functioning for displaying certain time sensitive information.

A method performed by a processor of a electronic device, including rendering (), on an electronic display, a line segment having a first direction and moving in a second direction. The method also includes a step of determining () whether the direction of the line segment (the first direction) is in the same direction that the line segment is moving (the second direction). If the processor determines that the line segment is not moving in the same direction of the direction of the line segment (the first direction), then the processor performs () a first action, such as adjusting the color intensity of the line segment. If the processor determines that the line segment is moving in the same direction of the direction of the line segment (e.g., the two directions are substantially parallel to each other), then the processor performs () a second action.

Method of enhancing moving graphical elements

Disclosed are a system and method for detecting a gesture performed by a user of a device. The device includes a screen having a backlight as with a liquid-crystal type display or which provides its own illumination as with a light-emitting diode type display. The device is programmed to emit a detectable optical signal from one or more distinct zones of the display. The device further includes an optical receiver for detecting any reflections of the emitted detectable optical signal. When a user's hand is located in proximity to the device display, the reflections of the detectable optical signal from that appendage are detected by the optical receiver and are used by the device to determine the presence and direction of travel of the user hand, signifying a user gesture. The distinct zones of the backlight may consist of a single zone, and the optical receiver may comprise multiple receivers.

Gesture-sensitive display

An electronic device utilizes a method for displaying content on a display of the device during different device operating modes. According to one embodiment, the device (e.g., through its processing subsystem) determines whether it is in an active mode or a sleep mode. If the device is in an active mode, the device illuminates a first portion of the display to display content. On the other hand, if the device is in a sleep mode, the device illuminates a second, substantially lesser portion of the display to display content. In one embodiment, the device display includes a display panel and two disparate backlights positioned behind the display panel. The first backlight is operable to illuminate the first portion of the display panel and the second backlight is operable to illuminate the second portion of the display panel when each backlight is respectively activated by the device's processing subsystem.

Method and apparatus for displaying content on a display of an electronic device during different device operating modes

The self emission device can include at least one light emission layer () encompassing an area, and generating light over such area in a distributed fashion. The self emission device also can include a first electrode () interfacing with a first side () of the light emission layer and a second electrode () interfacing with a second side () of the light emission layer. The first electrode and the second electrode can provide energy used by the light emission layer to illuminate. The self emission device can be a component of a display () comprising a reflective display panel ().

Described are a backlight, a backlight assembly for use in an electronic device and an electronic device configured to activate the backlight's first light source and to activate the backlight's second light source independently of one another. The described double-sided backlight may illuminate either the primary display or the secondary display. The disclosed backlight includes two light sources, each used to direct light in opposite directions from the double-sided backlight. The light guide of the backlight is configured to direct light from the first light source in a first direction to exit the light guide via its first face, and to direct light from the second light source in a second direction different from the first direction to exit the light guide via its second face.

A camera-movement compensation device includes a first liquid-crystal cell with a pair of parallel transparent plates and a first voltage source coupled to the first liquid-crystal cell and able to apply and alter a first voltage gradient across the plates of the first liquid-crystal cell. The device also includes a second liquid-crystal cell having a pair of parallel transparent plates and disposed so that each of the plates of the second liquid-crystal cell is parallel to the plates of the first liquid-crystal cell and in light communication with at least one wave of light passing through the plates of the first liquid-crystal cell, a second voltage source coupled to the second liquid-crystal cell and able to apply and alter a second voltage gradient across the surfaces of the second liquid-crystal cell, and a movement detector coupled to the voltage sources to alter the slope of the voltage gradients in proportion to a movement.

Device and method for reducing optical blurring

Disclosed are methods and devices for color compensation of a display having a translucent display cover applied to an outside surface of the display. A method may include characterizing a color shift due to the translucent display cover for when there is rendering of an image on the display and compensating for the color shift when rendering an image on the display. The method further may include measuring the color shift induced by the color of the finish, and as described below compensating the red, green, and blue (RGB) levels of the display so that the display image may be presented to the user as originally intended. In this way, the image quality may be substantially optimized for viewing regardless of the lens/cover surface color.

Methods and devices for display color compensation

A two-way trans-reflective display pixel () having two viewable sides () is disclosed. The two-way trans-reflective display pixel has a first transparent layer (), a second transparent layer (), and light modulating medium () sandwiched between them. Both the first and second transparent layers () have light reflectors () and light absorbers (), which allow light entering from either viewable sides () to partially reflected, partially absorbed, and partially transmitted, allowing an image to be viewable from both viewable sides ().
