An electrochemical cell for producing hydrogen gas and cupric chloride. The cell comprises: an anode compartment comprising an anode for disposition in an anolyte, wherein the anolyte is cuprous chloride in hydrochloric acid; a cathode compartment comprising a cathode, wherein the cathode comprises an electrocatalyst; a plurality of ion exchange membranes disposed between the anode compartment and the cathode compartment; and at least one center compartment defined by a pair of said ion exchange membranes and comprising at least one element for removal or sequestering of copper ions that cross at least one of said membranes from the anode compartment. Also described is a method for CuCl/HCl electrolysis in the production of hydrogen using the electrochemical cell.

A catalytic burner for oxidizing gaseous fuel in a catalytic combustion device having a gaseous fuel discharge tube, the burner comprises a tubular catalyst defining a catalytic combustion chamber and having an inlet opening at one end thereof for admitting gaseous fuel into the chamber, an outlet opening at the other end thereof for discharging products of combustion from the chamber, and a support for mounting the catalyst in coaxial relation on the discharge tube; and a gas distributor disposed within the inlet end of the catalyst proximate to but spaced from the discharge tube for uniformly distributing across the chamber gaseous fuel introduced into the chamber through the inlet opening.

Catalyst structures and burners for heat producing devices

A process for applying a highly crystalline form of silica, for example Silicalite, to a supporting structure, with a small thermal mass, such as a screen or a metal surface is described. A slurry of finely-divided high silica zeolite and a silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene binder is coated onto the support structure. Optionally, a noble catalyst is applied to the high silica zeolite either before or after the high silica zeolite is coated onto the support structure. The support structures coated according to this process can be used to catalyze flameless combustion of hydrogen or hydrocarbon gases with suitable amounts of air or oxygen if a noble metal catalyst is applied, or as an adsorbent structure in the absence of the metal catalyst.

Supported high silica zeolites

Sprayable dispersions or shaped articles are made from a material of high surface area by blending the material with polytetrafluoroethylene in the presence of a liquid. The blended material may be shaped into an article or coated onto the surface of an article. The article is then heated above 327.degree. C. The resulting product retains high surface area, and can be used as a catalyst or catalyst support, a biological support, or an adsorbant.
