A dual line ceramic glow plug uses a ceramic heater as an incandescent body which protrudes from the bottom of a metal fitting and which is made of an incandescent wire of a refractory metal embedded in a sintered ceramic powder. The bare ends of the incandescent wire terminate in a pair of metal terminal fittings secured to the end of the ceramic heater within the metal fitting. Electrical leads protruding from the terminal fittings are welded to a pair of terminal electrodes projecting outwardly from the top of the metal fitting. The ceramic heater is held in position by a metal sheath that is slipped over and bonded to the middle portion of said heater. The middle portion of the ceramic heater is brazed to the inner surface of the metal sheath in electrically insulated relation thereto with an intervening glass layer formed on the outer surface of the ceramic heater.

The degree of deterioration of lubricating oil used in an internal combustion engine is detected by measuring the lubricating oil dielectric constant with a pair of spaced sensor capacitor electrodes in the lubricating oil. The sensor capacitor is connected to a fixed capacitor to form a voltage divider connected across a constant frequency AC voltage source so that a developed voltage across the sensor capacitor corresponds to the lubricating oil dielectric constant. The frequency of the AC voltage is set at a value ranging from 50 KHz to 500 KHz.

In an control apparatus for controlling a timing of injection of fuel to be injected into an internal combustion engine, the apparatus comprises a closed loop system in which the data showing the actual timing of injection of of fuel is fed back. When the condition of the operation of the engine becomes a predetermined state, the control system is changed from the closed loop system to another system in which an adjusting member for adjusting the timing of injection of fuel is controlled by a signal which is not related to the actual timing of injection. As a result, the stability of the operation in low engine speed zone is remarkably improved.

In a Diesel engine with a Bosch-type fuel pump or the like having a control lever which determines the fuel injection quantity, idling speed is controlled by a movable stopper which abuts the control lever to place a lower limit on fuel injection quantity during idling. A control unit derives a target idling speed value according to engine temperature, electrical load, etc. and controls the pneumatic actuator of the stopper in accordance with the difference between actual engine speed during idling and the target idling speed. When the engine is not idling, the pneumatic actuator may be controlled to act as a dashpot, damping the return of the control lever to its idling position. Electromagnetically controlled valves respond to the control unit by providing atmospheric pressure or negative pressure to the pneumatic actuator. An auxiliary valve is provided for bypassing a defective atmospheric pressure supplying valve.

In order to prolong the life of the engine the maximum temperature and engine speed thereof are limited in accordance with the temperature of the engine coolant by controlling the amount of fuel supplied to said engine. During 'running-in' of the engine the maximum temperature and engine speed limits are gradually increased until a predetermined amount of distance has been traversed by the vehicle in which the engine is disposed.

A fuel cut-off valve in the fuel injection pump of an internal combustion engine is provided with a device for facilitating the opening of the valve against pressure forces normally biasing the valve closed. A pair of solenoids may be provided, with both being used to open the valve and only one to hold the valve open. Alternately, a single solenoid may be supplied with a large quantity of power to open the valve, and considerably small power to hold the valve open. In a second alternative, an auxiliary passageway is formed in the valve, and a pressure relief valve normally blocking the auxiliary passageway can be opened to alleviate the pressure on the first valve.

A fuel injection pump serves to inject fuel into an engine. A movable member adjustably determines the rate of fuel injection into the engine. The fuel injection rate depends on the position of the movable member. A critical position of the movable member defines the boundary between a fuel injection enabling range and a fuel injection disabling range. This critical position is measured. An operating condition of the engine is sensed. The movable member is then controlled on the basis of the measured engine operating condition and the measured critical position.

In a fuel injection system, as an engine crankshaft rotates twice, a working chamber contracts and expands a number of times equal to twice the number of engine combustion chambers. Each time the working chamber expands, fuel is conducted to the working chamber. During alternate contractions of the working chamber, fuel is directed from the working chamber toward each of the combustion chambers in sequence to be injected thereinto at a first timing. During the intervening contractions of the working chamber, fuel is directed from the working chamber toward each of the combustion chambers in sequence to be injected thereinto at a second timing. The second timing follows the first timing by a fraction of at least one operating stroke of the engine. In another fuel injection system of this invention, fuel is periodically injected into an engine combustion chamber at a first timing with respect to rotation of the engine crankshaft. Fuel is also periodically injected into the combustion chamber at a second timing with respect to rotation of the crankshaft. The quantity of fuel injected at the first timing increases to a preset maximum level as the quantity of fuel injected at the second timing increases to a predetermined level. The first timing fuel quantity remains at the preset maximum level as the second timing fuel quantity increases from the predetermined level.

The rate of fuel injection by the second pump at the first timing is inversely related to the rate of fuel injection by the second pump at the second timing.
