A plasma display panel with high accuracy of addressing is provided by suppressing spread of address discharge in the column direction. The plasma display panel includes first main electrodes and second main electrodes for row selection and address electrodes for column selection. A discharge space is continuous over the full length of the screen in each column. The address electrode is patterned in such a way that each first area opposed to the second main electrode is smaller than each second area opposed to the metal film of the first main electrode, in corresponding third areas between partitions of each column of the display panel.

Plasma display panel and method for driving the panel

A plasma display panel includes a plurality of row electrodes defining rows of a screen. The row electrodes are arranged at intervals so that adjacent row electrodes are capable of serving as an electrode pair for generating a surface discharge. Each of the row electrodes includes a belt-shaped base extending along the full length of the screen in a direction of the rows and protrusions extending from the base toward an adjacent row electrode in every column.

Plasma display panel with various electrode projection configurations

An AC type plasma display panel having a first and a second electrode, each extending along a line direction and aligning along a row direction across a discharge gap therebetween, where is formed a display discharge cell. A third electrode extends along the row direction and intersects the first and second electrodes. Thus a display matrix is formed with the lines and the rows, and an address discharge cell is formed with the second electrode and the third electrode. Each of the first and second electrodes comprises a laminate of an electrically conductive transparent film stripe having a first side distant from the discharge gap and a second side near to the discharge gap with a metal film stripe thereon. A width of the metal film stripe is narrower than a width of the transparent film stripe. The metal film stripe has a third side distant from the discharge gap, and a fourth side near to the discharge gap. The metal film stripe of at least the first electrode is located such that a first distance between the second side and fourth side is smaller than a second distance between the first side and third second side, whereby a reliable long term operation can be accomplished while reducing the load of the driving circuit without decreasing the luminous efficiency.

Electrode structure of an AC type plasma display panel

A method for driving a plasma display panel includes carrying out an erase address operation when a display on the screen is renewed. The erase address operation includes the steps of carrying out an address preparation operation for producing the wall charge in all the discharge cells through a first step of generating a discharge only in a discharge cell in an ON-state and a second step of generating a discharge only in a discharge cell in an OFF-state, and carrying out an operation for selectively erasing the wall charge in a discharge cell other than a discharge cell corresponding to data of the image to be displayed.
