A chain tensioner includes an oil supply passage for supplying hydraulic oil into a pressure chamber defined by a cylinder and a plunger, and a check valve provided at the end of the oil supply passage. A leak gap is defined between the sliding surfaces of the cylinder and the plunger. The plunger is biased by a return spring in the direction in which the plunger protrudes out of the cylinder. A plug is press-fitted in a cylindrical inner periphery of a through hole formed in the plunger to extend from a protruding end surface of the plunger to the pressure chamber to define an air vent passage. It is possible to change the hydraulic damper force simply by replacing the plug with another different type of plug to define a different air vent passage.

Chain tensioner, chain tensioner group, and method of manufacturing a chain tensioner

A tensioner assembly includes a pulley arm pivotable about a pivot shaft, and a tension pulley mounted on the pulley arm at its end remote from the pivot shaft and pressed against a belt to keep the tension of the belt. The tension pulley is rotatably mounted around a base portion of the pulley arm through a rolling bearing with the inner surface and axial rear end surface of the bearing inner race in contact with the outer peripheral surface of the base portion and an end surface of a shoulder of the base portion, respectively. The base portion has an axial through hole formed with an internal thread on its inner surface. A support bolt is threaded into the through hole from the axial front end to press the rolling bearing against the end surface of the shoulder. The internal thread has an axial front end located in the vicinity of, or axially rearwardly of, the end surface of the shoulder.

Tensioner assembly

In a fulcrum bearing device for a pulley arm, a sleeve is inserted in a shaft hole formed in a boss portion of a pulley arm, washers are fitted on the outer peripheries of small diameter tube portions formed at the respective end portions of the sleeve, and the sleeve is fixed to an engine block by means of a bolt inserted through the sleeve and tightened, so that the pulley arm is pivotally supported. The shaft hole is formed at its respective end portions with seal receiving recesses having large diameters. Each seal member includes a cylindrical portion provided on its outer peripheral portion and press-fitted in the seal receiving recess, and a radial lip extending obliquely inwardly and provided on the inner periphery of the seal member. The distal end portions of the radial lips are kept in elastic contact with the outer diameter surface of the sleeve.

Fulcrum bearing device for pulley arm

A hydraulic auto-tensioner includes a cylinder containing hydraulic oil, a rod inserted in the cylinder, and two coupling pieces mounted to the bottom of the cylinder and the top end of the rod, respectively. A support ring is inserted in the mounting hole of each coupling piece, and a bush is inserted in the support ring. One of the radially inner surface of the mounting hole and the radially outer surface of the support ring is a curved surface such that the support ring is alignable. Radially outwardly extending flanges are formed at one end of the support ring and at the other end of the bush such that the flanges axially face the respective end surfaces of the coupling piece with gaps left therebetween. A coupling arrangement is provided between the support ring and the bush which is adapted to engage both the support ring and the bush when the bush is inserted into the support ring, thereby axially inseparably coupling them together.

Hydraulic auto-tensioner

An auto-tensioner includes a plunger slidably inserted in a cylinder and having a closed front end protruding from the cylinder and an open rear end which is located in the cylinder. The plunger is formed with an internal thread on its inner periphery. A screw rod having an external thread formed on its outer periphery thereof and inserted in the plunger with its external thread in threaded engagement with the internal thread of the plunger. The screw rod has a rear end protruding from the open rear end of the plunger. A seat member is mounted in the cylinder and in abutment with the rear end of the screw rod. A return spring having one end thereof supported by the screw rod biases the plunger outwardly of the cylinder to press the closed front end of the plunger against a chain or a belt. An elastic member which is compressible in the axial direction of the cylinder supports the seat member.

Auto-tensioner

A chain tensioner includes a cylinder having a closed end, an internally threaded plunger axially slidable in the cylinder, a return spring biasing the plunger in the protruding direction from the cylinder, and a screw rod having an external thread in threaded engagement with the internal thread of the plunger. The portion of the screw rod protruding from the plunger abuts a rod seat provided in the cylinder. The screw rod has a rolled external thread and an intermediate portion protruding from the plunger and having an outer diameter smaller than the diameter of the root of the external thread. The screw rod has a forged contact surface, to be contacted with the rod seat, on the axial end face of the intermediate portion. The internal thread may be formed by pressing, and a pressed recess, corresponding to the internal thread, may be formed on the plunger's outer circumference.

Chain tensioner

A chain tensioner includes a cylindrical cylinder having an open end and a bottom, a cylindrical plunger axially slidably inserted in the cylinder and having a bottom and an open end located in the cylinder, a screw rod mounted in the cylinder and having an external thread on an outer periphery thereof, wherein the plunger has a protrusion on an inner periphery thereof which is in threaded engagement with the external thread of the screw rod, and wherein the external thread has a pressure flank for receiving pressure when a force is applied that tends to push the plunger into the cylinder, and a clearance flank, the pressure flank having a larger flank angle than the clearance flank, whereby the external thread is serration-shaped, and a return spring mounted between the plunger and the screw rod and biasing the plunger in a direction to protrude from the cylinder, thereby pressing a chain with the plunger, wherein the protrusion extends only a limited arcuate range of the inner periphery of the plunger.

A chain tensioner includes a plunger axially slidable in a cylinder to define a pressure chamber, filled with hydraulic oil, whose volume is variable upon axial plunger movement. A restricted passage defined between the plunger and the cylinder communicates the chamber with outside. A spring biases the plunger to increase the pressure chamber volume. An oil supply passage supplies oil to the pressure chamber and a check valve allows only oil flow into the pressure chamber, and includes an annular valve seat, a check ball movable into and out of contact with the valve seat, and a check ball retainer formed by drawing. The retainer includes a tubular portion with a bottom at one end. The tubular portion has an opening, formed by punching outwardly, through which oil can flow in and out. The opening extends to a border between the tubular portion and the bottom of the retainer.

A plungerand a springbiasing the plungeroutwardly are mounted in a cylinder chamberformed in a housing. The housingis provided with an oil supply passagecommunicating with a pressure chamberformed in the back of the plunger. The housinghas an outer diameter that is substantially constant over the entire axial length, so that such housings can be mass-produced by pressing. It is thus possible to lower the cost of the chain tensioner.

A chain tensioner for use with a chain of a vehicle engine, includes a housing and a plunger slidably mounted in a cylinder chamber formed in the housing. The plunger is biased outwardly by a return spring mounted in a pressure chamber defined in the cylinder chamber by the plunger. A check valve is provided in the cylinder chamber to prevent backflow of hydraulic oil in the pressure chamber. A relief valve, provided in the plunger, opens above a relief pressure, thereby discharging hydraulic oil in the pressure chamber. An oil leakage clearance is defined between the plunger and the inner wall of the cylinder chamber. The relief pressure and the oil leakage clearance dimension are determined such that the tension in the chain is kept at such a level that vibrations of the chain are minimum at any temperature of hydraulic oil and at any engine revolution speed.

Chain tensioner for two-wheeled vehicle engine

A chain tensioner includes a housing having a closed bottom. A rod is axially movably inserted in the housing for pressing a chain. A wear ring is mounted to the outer periphery of the rod and is biased by a return spring mounted in the housing in a direction away from the bottom of the housing. A nut member is mounted between the wear ring and the bottom of the housing so as to be coaxial with the housing and axially movable relative to the housing. A ring-shaped spring member is provided between the nut member and the bottom of the housing to support the nut member. A screw rod is provided between the rod and the bottom of the housing and in threaded engagement with the nut member. A spring is provided between the screw rod and the bottom of the housing to bias the screw rod in a direction away from the bottom of the housing. The screw rod has an end surface that is in abutment with the rod.

A chain tensioner includes a housing defining a cylinder chamber having a closed end. A cylindrical plunger having a closed front end is slidably received in the cylinder chamber. A nut member and a return spring are mounted in the cylinder chamber. The return spring biases the plunger outwardly of the housing to press its closed end against a pivotally supported chain guide. The nut member has a serration-shaped internal thread formed on the inner periphery thereof which is in threaded engagement with a serration-shaped external thread formed on the outer periphery of the screw rod. The screw rod is biased toward the closed end of the plunger by a rod spring. A damper is mounted between the front end of the screw rod and the closed front end of the plunger for damping, in cooperation with the return spring, a pushing force applied to the plunger, and for allowing the screw rod and the plunger to move relative to each other in a direction in which the distance between respective remote ends thereof decreases by an amount not less than an axial play present between the internal and external threads.

A chain tensioner includes a housing defining a cylinder chamber, and a plunger having a small-diameter end and a spring both mounted in the cylinder chamber. A register ring is fitted in a ring-receiving groove formed in the inner periphery of the cylinder chamber near its open end. A plurality of annular grooves are formed in the outer periphery of the plunger so as to be axially spaced from each other at equal intervals. The register ring is adapted to be press-fitted in one of the annular grooves. With the register ring trapped between an engaging surface of a first annular groove which is one of the annular grooves located nearest to the front end of the plunger and a locking surface of the ring-receiving groove, an outer cylindrical surface of the plunger extending forwardly from the first annular groove has its front portion supported by an inner cylindrical surface of the cylinder chamber extending forwardly from the ring-receiving groove.

An auto-tensioner includes a housing having an open end and a closed bottom at another end. A cylindrical plunger is slidably inserted in the housing with its open end facing the closed bottom of the housing and its other end protruding from the housing. A ring-shaped seal member is mounted between the inner periphery of the housing and the outer periphery of the plunger for hermetically sealing oil in the housing. A screw rod and a nut member are mounted in the plunger so as to be coaxial with the plunger, with the nut member in threaded engagement with the screw rod. A return spring is mounted between the nut member and the plunger to bias the nut member and the plunger in a direction axially away from each other. A spring is mounted between the screw rod and the closed bottom of the housing to bias the screw rod in a direction away from the closed bottom of the housing.
