Provided is a video display device wearable on the head of a user, wherein the video display device includes a video display unit capable of switching two or more display methods, a control unit for indicating a display method to the video display unit, a first detection unit for detecting the motion of the head of a user, a second detection unit for detecting the motion of the point of view of the user, and a motion determination unit for determining the motion state of the device user by using the output from the first detection unit and the output from the second detection unit. The control unit indicates a change of display methods to the video display unit in accordance with the determination result of the motion determination unit.

A luminance determining unit determines a luminance distribution of an exterior circumstantial image in a line-of-sight direction of a driver, and a luminance changing unit determines a bright region of this luminance distribution. Further, the luminance changing unit determines a luminance after the change in a peripheral region of this bright region. A virtual-image creating unit creates a virtual image based on the determined luminance, and a display processing unit displays this virtual image on a display unit. In this manner, since a display system displays the virtual image for use in increasing the luminance in periphery of the bright region, the feeling of the brightness for the driver can be moderated, and therefore, the visual recognition can be improved. That is, the display system can output the virtual image depending on the circumstances.

A virtual image display device has a function of projecting a prescribed virtual image video within a visual field of a user and detects an actual visual recognition distance from the user to an object relating to a visually recognized object at which the user is gazing. A virtual image projection device that shows video to a human eye includes a virtual light source surface () that emits a light beam in a predetermined angular distribution, an image forming lens () that condenses the light beam from the virtual light source surface (), and a display () that creates video. When the virtual light source surface () is disposed at a nearly focal position on the front side of the image forming lens (), the display () is disposed at a nearly focal position on the rear side of the image forming lens.
