There is provided a process for the production of a transition alumina by thermally decomposing an aluminum sulfate wherein the thermal decomposition is carried out under an atmosphere comprising a reducing substance, and the transition alumina produced by the process has a specific BET surface are of not smaller than 400 m.sup.2 /g.

Process for production of transition alumina

A heat resistant transition alumina produced by mixing aluminum sulfate and a lanthanum compound, heating the mixture, and then thermally decomposing the mixture, and a process for producing the heat resistant transition alumina. The heat resistant transition alumina has a high BET specific surface area, and an excellent heat resistance as exhibiting a less reduction in the BET specific surface area even under temperatures of 1000.degree. C. or higher, and exhibits a high porosity even when coated onto other catalyst supports having a lower specific surface area, and is producibile at a lower cost.

Heat resistant transition alumina and process for producing the same

An improved process for the production of a low density formed product of an activated alumina having a large macro-pore volume and an excellent abrasion resistance, which comprises mixing the starting solid material selected from an alumina powder being able to be re-hydrated and a mixture of the alumina and other solid material with water, said starting solid material having an average particle size of 1 micron to 35 micron and a quarter deviation of particle distribution of not more than about 1.5, forming the mixture of a solid material and water into various shapes, re-hydrating the formed product by keeping it under wetted atmosphere or in water, and calcining the resulting re-hydrated product.

Process for the production of low density activated alumina formed

A hollow catalyst carrier and hollow catalyst made of a transition-alumina (e.g. .gamma.-alumina) which comprises a calcined product having a pipe-like or multi-cell structure and having a very large void ratio (i.e. not less than 3%), a very large specific surface area (i.e. not less than 5 m.sup.2 /g), a bulk density of 0.8 to 1.8 g/cm.sup.3, a compressive strength in the extrusion direction of not less than 20 kg/cm.sup.2 and at least one hole in the extrusion direction, and a process for the production thereof by subjecting a powder containing a rehydratable alumina to an extrusion molding, rehydrating the molded product and followed by calcining. The hollow catalyst carrier and hollow catalyst have excellent properties for carrying the catalytically active components thereon and have an excellent mechanical strength.
