A reel holder for use in a tape winding apparatus comprises a cylindrical drum unit which is rotated by the tape winding apparatus. A plurality of lock pins are radially movably mounted in a peripheral portion of the drum unit. Each each lock pin is axially movable between a projected position wherein an outer end thereof is projected outwardly from a cylindrical outer wall of the drum unit and a retracted position wherein the outer end thereof is retracted into the drum unit. First and second buttons are mounted on an axial end of the drum unit. Each button is movable in parallel with the axis of the drum unit between raised and depressed positions with respect to the axial end of the drum unit. A transmission device is installed in the drum unit and operated in such a manner as to move the lock pins to the projected position when the first button is moved to the depressed position and permit the lock pins to return to the retracted position when the second button is moved to the depressed position.

Tape dropouts are reduced, in a digital magnetic tape recorder having a tape length metering roller that provides running length information, by using specially arranged tape guide rollers that cooperate with the metering roller to define a V-shaped tape path to lessen the stresses imposed upon the magnetic tape and to minimize the extent that the tape wraps around the metering roller. The metering roller is arranged at the vertex of the V-shaped tape path with a wrap angle of about ninety degrees and by specifically arranging the guide rollers and the capstan-pinch roller on the tape recorder top plate the tape path length is reduced, thereby accommodating additional apparatus on the top plate.

A mounting structure for tape guide elements, for use with a guide drum adapted to have a tape wound in an .OMEGA.-shaped configuration around its periphery, has a base fixed adjacent to the root portion of the drum and has first and second guide supports for the guide elements. At least one of the guide elements is movable relative to the base between an operative position close to the drum in which it guides the tape about the drum and an inoperative position at a further distance from both the other guide element and the periphery of the drum. A pair of spaced apart positioning members engage the periphery of the drum at its root portion for accurately locating the operative positions of the tape guide elements.
