The present invention relates to a compound having the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein X stands for a halogen atom or a methyl radical; and R stands for an alkyl or alkoxy radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms provided that R represents an alkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms when X is a methyl radical, a process for the production thereof, an agricultural composition containing the said compound as an effective component, and a method for preventing and healing the diseases of the plant and in soil using the said compound.

Fungicidal and germicidal benzanilides

2-Alkylbenzanilide is produced by reacting an alkyl 2-alkylbenzoate having the formula ##STR1## wherein X represents a lower alkyl group and R represents a lower alkyl group with an aniline having the formula ##STR2## wherein Y represents hydrogen atom, an alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, benzyloxy or halobenzyloxy group in the presence of an alcoholate in a solvent which is hardly azeotropically distilled with the by-product of alcohol.

Process for producing 2-alkylbenzanilide

An agricultural germicidal composition, which comprises a benzanilide of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X represents halogen or methyl and R represents hydrogen, C.sub.1-5 alkyl or C.sub.1-5 alkoxy and a phthalimide of the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 represents a polyhaloalkyl group as active ingredients for the treatment of plant, soil and seed diseases.

Agricultural germicidal composition

A fungicidal composition for agricultural and horticultural use comprising a suitable carrier and fungicidally effective amount of N-(4-fluorophenyl)-2,3-dichloromaleimide per part of at least 1 compound selected from the group consisting of a compound expressed by the formula: ##STR1## (where M represents manganese or zinc, and when M is manganese, zinc may coordinate in the molecules), N-trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxyimide and 8-oxyquinoline copper. The composition has been found to possess unusually high anti-fungal activity in protecting against various plant disease.

An agricultural germicide having the formula ##SPC1## Wherein R represents C.sub.1.sub.-12 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, benzyl or chlorobenzyl.

Agricultural substituted 2-methylbenzanilide germicide

2,4-Dimethyl-3-carboxanilido- or naphthyl amido-furan of the formula ##SPC1## Involving the reaction of ##SPC2## Or ##SPC3## Wherein X represents a halogen atom, an alkyl group, hydroxyl group, an alkoxyl group, an alkenyloxy group, trifluoromethyl group, phenyl group, cyano group, acetyl group, a metal substituted hydroxy group or a combination thereof are useful as agricultural germicides, fungicides, insecticides and nematodicides.

2,4-Dimethyl-3-carboxyanilidofuran compounds

Novel thioureidobenzene compounds having the general formula ##EQU1## wherein R and R' are lower alkyl groups and X is oxygen or sulfur atom is prepared by reacting a compound having the general formula ##EQU2## wherein Y is chlorine or bromine, with a compound having the general formula ##EQU3## wherein M is ammonium or an alkali metal. These compounds have high miticidal and fungicidal activity.
