A detergent tablet for fabric washing is compacted from a particulate composition containing detergent active compound, detergency builder, a bleach system comprising coated sodium percarbonate and at least one bleach activator, and optionally other detergent ingredients, where the tablet comprises a plurality of discrete regions, and wherein the bleach activator and the coated sodium percarbonate are concentrated in respective different regions of the tablet. This separation of activator and percarbonate increases the stability of the bleach activator.

A particulate free-flowing laundry detergent composition comprises at least two different granular components: a granular component containing anionic surfactant, and a granular nonionic surfactant component comprising from 20 to 30 wt % of nonionic surfactant on a non-spray-dried particulate carrier material comprising sodium sesquicarbonate. The nonionic surfactant component is preferably prepared by in-situ neutralisation of sodium carbonate with a water-soluble organic acid in the presence of the nonionic surfactant, in a high- or moderate-shear mixer.

A particulate detergent composition having a bulk density of 700 g/l or less and containing at least 10 wt % (preferably at least 15 wt %) of organic detergent surfactant comprises a base powder composed of at least two granular components. Less than 80% by weight, preferably less than 66% by weight, of the base powder has a compressibility (measured at 20-25&deg; C. and about 40% relative humidity) of 17% or more. Preferably one of the components of the base powder is a granule containing a high level (at least 60 wt %) of anionic surfactant.

Detergent powders built with sodium carbonate and having improved flow properties are prepared by a process in which a selected acid, for example, succinic acid or alkylbenzene sulphonic acid, is added to a slurry in order to transform sodium carbonate into needle-like crystals of sodium sedquicarbonate, and the slurry is then dried, preferably spray-dried, to form a powder.

Low or zero-P detergent powders are prepared by a process in which sodium aluminosilicate, a polymeric powder structurant and other components are slurried and spray-dried, and particulate sodium silicate of defined characteristics is postdosed.

Low phosphorus containing detergent powders and process for preparing

A granular low-phosphate detergent composition is prepared by spray-drying a slurry to give a base powder containing a low to moderate level of sodium tripolyphosphate and low levels of inorganic salts, then postdosing solid material, including sodium sulphate, of high bulk density and of smaller particle size than the base powder. The resulting product has a bulk density at least 150 g/liter greater than that of the base powder and shows improved dispensing properties in an automatic washing machine.

The structure and hence the powder properties of spray-dried detergent powders are improved by the incorporation of a small amount of a succinate salt. In particular the invention is applicable to powders which are low in inherent structurants, especially to powders low in sodium silicate and in phosphate builder salts. Buccinic acid partially neutralized with sodium hydroxide is especially effective as a structuring aid.
