A system for air compression, storage and expansion may include a low-pressure and a high-pressure compressor, a motor, a heat storage, an air storage volume, a high-pressure and a low-pressure turbine, and a generator. The system may further include a first air path connecting sequentially the low-pressure compressor, the heat storage, the high-pressure compressor, and the air storage volume. The system may further include a second air path connecting sequentially the air storage volume, the high-pressure turbine, the heat storage, and the low-pressure turbine.

System and method for compressed air energy storage with wide temperature range thermal storage

A compressed air energy storage system is described, including a compressor fluidly coupled to a compressed air reservoir and an expansion train including at least a first turbine. The system further includes an electric machine aggregate configured: for converting electric power into mechanical power and driving the compressor therewith during the energy storing mode; and for converting mechanical power produced by the expansion train into electric power during the power production mode. A combustor is configured for receiving fuel and compressed air and producing combustion gas, and for supplying the combustion gas to the first turbine.

Two-stage reciprocating compressor optimization control system

Systems and methods are provided for controlling exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). In one example, an engine system includes a first EGR valve coupling an exhaust manifold to an engine exhaust system, a second EGR valve coupling the exhaust manifold to an engine intake system, and a control unit. The control unit selectively adjusts a position of the first EGR valve based on a target amount, and adjusts a position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount and a position of the first EGR valve. Responsive to a first degradation condition of the first EGR valve, the control unit adjusts the position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount and based on a pressure of the first exhaust manifold, and responsive to a second degradation condition of the first EGR valve, adjusts the position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount.

Method and systems for exhaust gas control

The present application provides a heat exchanger for exchanging heat between two fluid flows in cross-flow arrangement. The heat exchanger includes at least one heat exchanging module including a first heat exchanging component and a second heat exchanging component. The first heat exchanging component including a fluid inlet header, a fluid outlet header, and at least one heat exchanging passageway defining a first tube-side fluid flow path of a first portion of a fluid in a first direction. The second heat exchanging component including a fluid inlet header, a fluid outlet header, and at least one heat exchanging passageway defining a second tube-side fluid flow path in a second direction for an additional portion of the fluid, wherein the first direction is opposed to the second direction. The opposing first tube-side fluid flow path and the second tube-side fluid flow path equalizing the temperature distribution over the cross-section of a cross-flow fluid exiting the module.

The present disclosure relates to a multi-pressure stage, organic Rankine cycle ('ORC') that includes a dry organic working fluid that may be split, such that a first portion of the working fluid flows through a high pressure stage and a second portion of the working fluid flows through a low pressure stage. Components of the high pressure stage and the low pressure stage may be heated by a heat source stream that may be split in a tee downstream of a high pressure evaporator and recombined in a mixer before entering a low pressure preheater.

A nozzle assembly of a turbocharger includes a nozzle and a ring-shaped body. The nozzle has flow passages extending through the nozzle and configured to direct air received from a volute housing of the turbocharger through the nozzle to turbine blades of the turbocharger. The ring-shaped body is coupled with the nozzle and is configured to rotate around the nozzle. The ring-shaped body includes blocking segments that block the flow of the air and openings between the blocking segments that permit the air to flow through the ring-shaped body. The ring-shaped body is configured to rotate relative to the nozzle to change how many of the flow passages in the nozzle are blocked by the blocking segments of the ring-shaped body.

Dual-fuel engine system includes cylinders in which the cylinders have an intake valve and an exhaust valve that control a flow of fluid into and out of a combustion chamber of the corresponding cylinder. The intake valve is configured to have an intake valve closure (IVC) timing. The dual-fuel engine system is configured to operate in a single-fuel mode and a dual-fuel mode. The combustion chamber and a piston are designed to provide a compression ratio. The dual-fuel engine system also includes one or more processors that are operably coupled to and configured to control operation of the first fuel injector. The compression ratio and the IVC timing are selected to achieve a target pre-combustion temperature. The target pre-combustion temperature permits the dual-fuel engine system to operate at a high substitution rate in the dual-fuel mode and at a sufficient fuel efficiency in the single-fuel mode.

A system and method for generating electric power using a generator coupled to a turboexpander is disclosed. The system includes one or more thermal pumps configured for heating a fluid to generate a pressurized gas. A portion of the pressurized gas is discharged to a buffer chamber for further utilization in a Rankine system. A further portion of the pressurized gas is expanded in a turboexpander for driving a generator for generating electric power. Optionally, the system includes a pump to pressurize a portion of the fluid depending on the systems operating condition. The system further includes one or more sensors for sensing temperature and pressure and outputs one or more signals representative of the sensed state. The system includes a control unit for receiving the signals and outputs one or more control signals for controlling the flow of gases and liquid in the valves and the check valve.

Methods and systems for air fuel ratio control

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems and methods are provided. In one embodiment, a method for controlling an engine includes providing a first EGR gas flow to an intake manifold of the engine by closing a first EGR valve or a second EGR valve and at least partially opening the other of the first EGR valve and the second EGR valve, wherein the first and second EGR valves are respectively positioned in first and second EGR passages respectively coupled between first and second donor cylinder groups and an intake manifold, and providing a second EGR gas flow that is higher than the first EGR gas flow to the intake manifold by fully opening the first EGR valve or the second EGR valve and at least partially opening the other of the first EGR valve and the second EGR valve.

Systems and methods for controlling exhaust gas recirculation

An exemplary turbocharger system for an internal combustion engine is provided. The turbocharger system includes a first turbine and a second turbine. The first turbine is in fluid communication with the internal combustion engine. The first turbine receives a first portion exhaust gas discharged from the internal combustion engine and provides a first turbine exhaust gas. The second turbine is in fluid communication with the first turbine via an inter-stage channel. The inter-stage channel transports the first turbine exhaust gas from the first turbine to the second turbine. The inter-stage channel is in thermal connection with an exhaust gas recirculation channel defined between an inlet and an outlet of the internal combustion engine. The first turbine exhaust gas flowing through the inter-stage channel is capable of being heated by a second portion exhaust gas discharged from the internal combustion engine and flowing through the exhaust gas recirculation channel.

The system comprises a first Rankine cycle-first working fluid circulation loop comprising a heater, an expander, a heat exchanger, a recuperator, a condenser, a pump, and a first working fluid; integrated with a) a second Rankine cycle-second working fluid circulation loop comprising a heater, an expander, a condenser, a pump, and a second working fluid comprising an organic fluid; and b) an absorption chiller cycle comprising a third working fluid circulation loop comprising an evaporator, an absorber, a pump, a desorber, a condenser, and a third working fluid comprising a refrigerant. In one embodiment, the first working fluid comprises CO. In one embodiment, the first working fluid comprises helium, air, or nitrogen.
