A method of displacing a pumping assembly. In a first step, a first current is applied in a first direction through a coil assembly to displace a drive assembly from an initial position to cause a first pumping motion. Then, the drive assembly is returned to the initial position to cause a second pumping motion. At some point nearing the end of the second pumping motion, a second current is applied in the first direction through the coil assembly to decelerate the drive assembly before it reaches the initial position. A third current may be applied in a second direction through the coil assembly to cause or assist a return of the drive assembly to the initial position. An apparatus capable of carrying out the method is also disclosed.

Method of controlling a pumping assembly

A two-stroke internal combustion engine has two cylinders each having an exhaust port. Two exhaust conduits are connected to the two exhaust ports. A passage is provided between the two conduits to fluidly communicate the two together. An actuator moves a valve to open or close the passage depending on the engine speed.

Exhaust valve for two-stroke engine

A blow-off valve assembly for an internal combustion engine cooling system is biased to prevent coolant flow from the cooling system to the internal combustion engine when a pressure of the coolant is below a threshold. An actuating assembly is configured to impart a force on the blow-off valve sufficient to overcome the bias of the blow-off valve assembly when pressure of the coolant is insufficient to open the blow-off valve assembly. An engine control unit (ECU) is configured to determine if engine operating conditions warrant activation of the actuating assembly to unseat the blow-off valve if coolant pressure is below the threshold and, if so, transmit an actuating command signal to the actuating assembly to open the blow-off valve.

Actuator assisted blow-off assembly to control coolant flow in an internal combustion engine

A combustion chamber and method of distributing fuel in a combustion chamber is disclosed. The combustion chamber includes a first section that is generally centrally positioned in the combustion chamber. A second section is offset from the first section and maintains a uniform distance between a fuel spray and a perimeter of the second section. Such a combustion chamber improves combustion by maintaining a generally uniform fuel spray spacing to the combustion chamber walls.

A piston for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. A bowl-shaped recess is constructed in the combustion face of the piston. The recess has a w-shaped cross-section. The w-shaped cross-section is unsymmetrical and has at least one side that is mostly vertical. The recess is positioned off-center in the face of the piston so that fuel that is injected into the cylinder is redirected by the recess toward a center space of the cylinder thereby improving combustion of fuel in the cylinder and preventing fuel from accumulating about a periphery of the combustion chamber.

The present invention provides a system and method of adaptively setting the idle speed of an internal combustion engine based on instantaneous power requirements of the engine. By adaptively setting engine idle speed based on instantaneous power requirements of the engine as well as the power requirements of any auxiliary devices, the noise and exhaust emissions of the engine may be reduced as well as improving fuel consumption efficiency. The engine's electronic control unit (ECU) is designed to regulate an idle speed controller based on current feedback received from sensors operationally connected to the engine as well as the various auxiliary devices. The ECU regulates the idle speed control such that the engine electronics are sufficiently energized to run the engine, but the engine idle speed is also set to a level that takes into account the instantaneous power requirements of the various system components and/or devices.

An arrangement for utilizing a combustion sensor with an internal combustion engine. The arrangement includes a sensor mounted to the outside of an engine cylinder for communication with exhaust gasses within the cylinder via a sampling passage. A mounting structure holds the sensor proximate the sampling passage and forms a sensor chamber to receive exhaust gas therein. The sensor chamber includes a flow diverter to prevent remaining combustion particles and liquid droplets from lodging against the sensor. The chamber also includes a collection region for collecting the particles and liquid which can then be expunged through a drain outlet.

Valve arrangement for combustion sensor

An exhaust pressure sensing system and method for an internal combustion engine. The system includes a pressure sensor positioned to sense exhaust pressure of an internal combustion engine. An attenuator reduces the relatively large pressure fluctuations that would otherwise impinge on the pressure sensor to provide an averaging of the exhaust backpressure to which the pressure sensor is exposed.
