A system and method of providing a route to a navigation system including calculating the route from road data including road segments, determining decision points on the route, wherein at least two road segments are connected to each other at each of the decision points, storing data of the determined decision points in a memory and encoding the route based on the stored data of the determined decision points.

Providing a navigation system with navigable routes

A navigation system may estimate a cruising range of a vehicle by performing a road network search. Digital map data that includes a set of road segments, where each road segment in the set can be associated with a hierarchy class and an elevation, may be retrieved. A road segment-specific weighting factor can be calculated for the road segments. The weighting factor can be calculated dependent on a distance of the specific road segment to a current location of the vehicle and on the elevation of the specific road segment. The road segments are selectively discarded by the navigation system based on the weighting factor and the associated hierarchy class to create a selected set of road segments. The road network search expands route links for the selected set of road segments based on an associated estimated energy consumption of the vehicle travelling along the route links.

System for estimating a cruising range of a vehicle

A vehicle navigation system having a database configured to store map data. The database includes links corresponding to road segments and attributes associated with the links. The map data includes at least some links associated with a curvature attribute. A mean absolute curvature is stored for the curvature attribute for corresponding links. The mean absolute curvature may be determined from a normalized sum or integral of absolute curvature values along the road segment corresponding to the link. The system includes a processing unit configured to estimate an energy consumption of the vehicle for a link using the curvature attribute retrieved from the database for the link.

Vehicle navigation system for estimating energy consumption of route links

A vehicle navigation system having a database configured to store map data. The database includes links corresponding to road segments and attributes associated with the links. The map data includes at least some links associated with a curvature attribute. A mean absolute curvature () is stored for the curvature attribute for corresponding links. The mean absolute curvature () may be determined from a normalized sum or integral of absolute curvature values along the road segment corresponding to the link. The system includes a processing unit configured to estimate an energy consumption of the vehicle for a link using the curvature attribute retrieved from the database for the link.

Vehicle navigation system

Various embodiments relate to a method of estimating an ability of a vehicle to reach a target road segment, comprising retrieving road segment data for road segments containing previously generated route information for routes connecting the road segments, the route information parameterizing costs associated for travelling along the respective route); and establishing first road segment data for the target road segment indicating a gateway road segment and indicating route information for a successive route from the gateway road segment to the target road segment. The method further comprises, based on the route information of the successive route, determining first costs for travelling along the successive route, and establishing, based on the indicated gateway road segment, second road segment data for the current road segment, the second road segment data indicating route information for an initial route from the current road segment to the gateway road segment. The method further comprises determining, based on the received route information for the initial route, second costs for travelling on the initial route and estimating, based on the determined first and second costs, the ability of the vehicle to reach the target road segment.

Method of estimating an ability of a vehicle to reach a target road segment, method of generating a database, and navigation system

A method and device for providing cost information associated with intersections of a road network are provided. Driving data indicative of at least one condition of a vehicle upon passage of the vehicle through a plurality of intersections are retrieved. For each intersection of the plurality of intersections, a set of feature values associated with the respective intersections is determined based on map data. Parameters of an intersection cost module are adjusted. The intersection cost module is configured to provide a cost value in response to a set of feature values associated with an intersection. The parameters of the intersection cost module are adjusted based on the received driving data and the sets of feature values determined for the plurality of intersections. The intersection cost module may also be used for route searches.

Providing cost information associated with intersections

Systems and methods for analyzing acceleration as a road segment characteristic in a vehicle are provided for determining information about a route including for example, the estimated fuel consumption of the route. An example of a system includes a data storage medium for storing map data having road segments, a bus interface to a data bus for receiving measured values of a velocity or an acceleration from a velocity or acceleration sensor, a position data receiver configured to receive position data for determining a current position, and a system controller. The system controller is configured to identify a road segment associated with the current position. The system controller retrieves parameters of a probability distribution of acceleration associated with the identified road segment from the data storage medium. Updated parameters of the probability distribution of acceleration are determined from the measured values of the velocity or acceleration.

Motor vehicle acceleration determining system

A method is provided for estimating a propulsion-related operating parameter of a vehicle for a road segment, and for determining routes based on the estimate. The method may be employed, for example, in a vehicle navigation system. In one example method, at least one operating parameter of the vehicle is estimated for the road segment based on information corresponding to the road segment. The propulsion-related operating parameter is estimated for the road segment using the at least one estimated operating parameter and at least one vehicle specific parameter. The at least one vehicle specific parameter is determined by acquiring driving data to determine a plurality of vehicle operating parameters while the vehicle is in operation. At least two of the determined vehicle operating parameters are used in a predetermined relationship that includes the at least one vehicle specific parameter. The at least one vehicle specific parameter is then determined from the driving data for the at least two vehicle operating parameters and the relationship.
