Methods, systems, devices, and products for acoustic detection in a borehole. Apparatus embodiments comprise an acoustic sensor including a pressure transducer comprising: an interface between a fluid reservoir and a fluid body, the interface including a flexing member attached to an optical medium, the pressure transducer configured to convert an acoustic pressure signal within a nominal borehole pressure incident on the pressure transducer to an alternating strain on the optical medium along an axis of the medium via movement of the flexing member, the acoustic pressure signal propagated via the fluid body; a detector configured to generate acoustic measurement information responsive to received electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the medium along the axis, at least one optical property of the medium being responsive to the alternating strain on the medium; and at least one coupled oscillator displacing a volume of the fluid reservoir responsive to the acoustic pressure signal to modify conversion by the flexing member of signal components of the acoustic pressure signal having a frequency within a predefined frequency range into strain of the optical medium, so that the electromagnetic radiation received by the detector represents a modified acoustic signal.

Downhole fiber optic hydrophone

A system and method for determining fluid inflow into a wellbore. The system may include a drill string including an earth-boring tool. The drill string may further include a first array of sensors arranged radially about the drill string in a region of the drill string after the earth-boring tool. The drill string may be configured to be inserted into the wellbore and the first array of sensors may be configured to detect an inflow of fluid into the wellbore through a change in an environmental property of the wellbore.

Fluid inflow sensing in a wellbore and related systems and methods

A system for acquiring directional information about a geologic formation includes at least one directionally sensitive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) assembly disposed at a borehole string including the downhole component. The at least one NMR assembly includes at least one magnet configured to generate a static magnetic field and at least one coil configured to generate an oscillating magnetic field, the at least one NMR assembly configured to perform an NMR measurement of at least one sector of a formation region. The system also includes a processing device configured to receive NMR measurement data from the at least one NMR assembly. The processing device is configured to analyze the NMR measurement data to estimate a parameter of the sector, determine a direction of the downhole component based on the estimated parameter; and steer the downhole component according to the determined direction.

Apparatus and methods directed to an assembly associated with a downhole tool, and including: a thermal housing; at least one internal component inside the thermal housing, wherein the at least one internal component comprises at least one thermally sensitive component; and a thermal isolation support connecting the at least one internal component to the tool. The thermal isolation support may comprise an additive manufacturing structural framework connected to the tool. The structural framework may include a plurality of structural members, with a majority of the plurality of structural members substantially non-parallel with a longitudinal axis of the downhole tool.

Apparatus embodiments comprise an acoustic sensor including: a pressure transducer comprising a flexing member attached to an optical medium, the transducer configured to convert a low-amplitude, high-frequency acoustic pressure signal within a nominal borehole pressure incident on the transducer to an alternating strain on the optical medium along an axis of the medium via movement of the flexing member while suppressing conversion of low-frequency signals and constant pressure into strain of the optical medium, the acoustic pressure signal propagated via a downhole fluid coupled with the transducer; and a detector configured to generate acoustic measurement information responsive to received electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the medium along the axis, the at least one optical property of the medium being responsive to the alternating strain on the medium such that the electromagnetic radiation received by the detector represents the acoustic signal.

An optical spectrometer with a tilted or brazed optical grating is useful to identify material composition, estimate physical characteristics, and measure physical conditions. Light from a sample or a space reflects to the grating; and stray light from the grating directed on an optical sensor (which can be a single sensor) and converted into an electrical signal, to obtain information about the sample or space. Examples of scanning include altering an angle the light strays from the optical grating by applying a strain to the optical grating, moving the optical sensor, and installing a mirror in the path of the stray light that reciprocatingly pivots over an angular range. In an example, the optical grating is formed on a light transmission medium that mounts to a piezoelectric element, that expands when energized to apply strain to the grating. In an example, the diffraction grating is a Fiber Bragg Grating.

Optical component and method for the production thereof

Methods, systems, devices, and products for estimating a parameter of interest of a downhole fluid in a borehole intersecting an earth formation. Apparatus include evanescent wave measurement instruments, which may include a substrate configured for contact with a downhole fluid such that at least a portion of the substrate is immersed in the downhole fluid; a waveguide formed in an interior of the substrate and having a configuration geometrically configured to generate an interaction between the downhole fluid and an evanescent wave arising from electromagnetic energy propagating in a segment of the waveguide; and a detector configured to generate measurement information indicative of the downhole fluid in response to electromagnetic signals received from the waveguide responsive to the interaction. The interaction may result in absorption of at least a portion of the electromagnetic energy propagating in the waveguide. The waveguide may be written in the substrate using laser pulses.

Systems and methods for measuring bending, weight on bit and torque on bit while drilling

An apparatus for determining torque on bit and bending forces in a drilling assembly. In one aspect, an apparatus for determining a property of a fluid is disclosed that in one embodiment may include a transparent member having an axis and a first end substantially perpendicular to the axis and a second end having an outer surface at a first angle to the axis, a light source directing light at the first end, a detector placed spaced from the second end, the space between the second end and the detector containing a fluid, wherein the detector detects light exiting from the outer surface at a second angle to the axis and passing through the fluid, and a controller for determining the second angle from the light detected by the detector. A processor determines the bulk fluid refractive index from the light detected by the detector and a property of the fluid therefrom.

An apparatus for sensing a parameter beneath a surface of the earth includes an optical fiber disposed beneath a surface of the earth and comprising at least one fiber Bragg grating sensor configured to sense the parameter and a wide-band light source disposed beneath the surface of the earth and configured to emit light in a wide band of wavelengths to illuminate the at least one fiber Bragg grating. An optical interrogator is disposed beneath the surface of the earth and configured to receive light reflected by the at least one fiber Bragg grating sensor and to transform a shift in wavelength of the reflected light into a variation of light intensity. A photo-sensor is configured to measure intensity of light received from the optical interrogator. Electronics are coupled to the photo-sensor and configured to measure a voltage representing the light intensity at the photo-sensor to sense the parameter.

An apparatus for measuring fluid characteristics includes: a solid transparent body including a plurality of internally reflective surfaces defining a n-sided base having a polygonal shape and having at least three sides, each reflective surface forming a side of the polygonal shape, the plurality of surfaces configured to direct the electromagnetic radiation beam along a path within the solid transparent body from an entry area to an exit area on the solid transparent body; an electromagnetic radiation source coupled to the entry area on the solid transparent body; and a detector coupled to the exit area on the solid transparent body and configured to receive at least a fraction of the reflected electromagnetic radiation beam, the detector configured to generate a signal based on the received electromagnetic radiation beam and transmit the signal to a processor for at least one of analysis of material characteristics and data storage.

Material characteristic estimation using internal reflectance spectroscopy

A method, apparatus and system for cooling a component of a downhole tool is disclosed. The apparatus includes a first desiccant configured to adsorb a refrigerant gas. A transmitter is configured to transmit electromagnetic energy into the first desiccant to enable desorption of the refrigerant gas from the first desiccant. A condenser condenses the desorbed refrigerant gas into a liquid phase. The condensed refrigerant evaporates from a liquid phase to a gaseous phase to cool the component. A second desiccant can be used, wherein the processor is configured to operate the cooling system in a first mode of operation in which the first desiccant is in thermal communication with the component and the second desiccant is thermally isolated from the component and a second mode of operation in which the second desiccant is in thermal communication with the component and the first desiccant is thermally isolated from the component.
