The present invention relates to a polymer comprising repeating units derived from at least one first monomer (monomer A) which is a molecule comprising a thiolactone ring and an ethylenically unsaturated, polymerizable double bond, and at least one second monomer (monomer B) which is N-vinyl pyrrolidone. Furthermore the present invention relates to a modified polymer, the structure of which is identical to the structure of the said polymer apart from the only difference, which is that all or at least some of the thiolactone moieties of the said polymer are modified by opening the thiolactone ring with a substance selected from the group consisting of ammonia, a primary amine, 2-amino-1-ethanol and L-lysine, wherein the N-atom of said substance is binding to the carbonyl group of the opened thiolactone ring. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a process for making the modified polymer and to the use of the polymer or of the modified polymer for treating hair.

Polymer for treating hair

The invention relates to aqueous polymer dispersions, comprising a water insoluble polymer P in the form of dispersed polymer particles, which is obtainable by free radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M, which comprise a) at least one monomer M1 which exhibits two ethylenically unsaturated moieties which are connected by a linker which comprises a disulfide moiety, and b) at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M2, which has a low water solubility. The invention also relates to processes for preparing such an aqueous polymer dispersion, to solid polymer compositions in powder form, obtainable by drying such polymer dispersions, to the use of such polymer dispersions in a coating material, adhesive or sealant and to a methods of coating a surface of a substrate which comprises applying an aqueous coating composition, which contains such an polymer dispersion.

A process for preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion, the process including forming a copolymer A from at least one &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-monoethylenically unsaturated Cto Cmonocarboxylic acid (monomers A1) and at least one other monoethylenically unsaturated compound (monomers A2); reacting the copolymer A with a metal compound M in an aqueous medium; and conducting free-radical polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound (monomer P) in the presence of the copolymer A in an aqueous medium.

Disclosed herein is a process for preparing an aqueous polymer latex by polymerising a monomer composition M by a radical emulsion polymerisation, where at least 95% of the monomer composition M is metered during a period P to the polymerisation reaction under polymerisation conditions, such that during at least one period P(n) within the period P, the relative amount of monomers M2, which are metered to the polymerisation reaction during the periods P(n), to the total amount of the monomer composition M, which is metered to the polymerisation reaction during said period P(n), is at least 1% by weight higher than the relative amount of monomers M2, which are metered to the polymerisation reaction outside of each of said periods P(n), to the total amount of the monomer composition M, which is metered to the polymerisation reaction outside of each of said periods P(n).

Process for preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion having high chemical resistance

The present invention relates to aqueous binder compositions which are based on aqueous multistage polymer dispersions, to the uses of such binder compositions, and to coating compositions comprising them. The aqueous binder composition comprises: a) a polymer P in the form of an aqueous multistage polymer dispersion of dispersed polymer particles, where the polymer particles comprise a first polymer having a glass transition temperature of at least 30&#xb0; C. and being made of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M-A, and a second polymer having a glass transition temperature of not more than 20&#xb0; C. and being made of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M-B, where the ethylenically unsaturated monomers M-A and M-B together comprise: i. 85% to 99.45% by weight, preferably 87.5% to 97% by weight and in particular 90% to 95.5% by weight, based in each case on the total amount of monomers M-A+M-B, of at least one neutral, monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M1 having a solubility in water of at most 50 g/l at 25&#xb0; C. and 1 bar; ii. 0.5% to 10% by weight, preferably 1% to 7.5% by weight and in particular 1.5% to 6.5% by weight, based in each case on the total amount of monomers M-A+M-B, of at least one neutral, monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M2 having a solubility in water of at least 100 g/l at 25&#xb0; C. and 1 bar; iii. 0.05 to 0.5% by weight, preferably 0.15% to 0.5% by weight and in particular 0.3% to 0.5% by weight, based in each case on the total amount of monomers M-A+M-B, of one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers M3 having an acidic group; and iv. optionally from 0 to 5% by weight and in particular from 0 to 4.5% by weight, based in each case on the total amount of monomers M-A+M-B, of one or more monomers M4 having at least two non-conjugated ethylenically unsaturated double bonds; and b) at least one carbodiimide having at least two carbodiimide moieties, which are bound to an aliphatic carbon atom.
