The calibration method, performed on a phased array device, wherein the method initiates a test signal and looping back a plurality of channel responses corresponding to the channel elements through the transmission line to a calibration circuit in the phased array device, wherein each of the channel responses is obtained when one of the channel elements is turned on, and the rest of the channel elements are turned off. The method further calculates a characteristic value corresponding to the transmission line based on the obtained channel responses of the channel elements, and adjusts a channel parameter of one of the channel elements based on the characteristic value of the transmission line.

Phased array device and calibration method therefor

A phased-array receiver that may be effectively implemented on a silicon substrate. A receiver includes multiple radio frequency (RF) front-ends, each configured to receive a signal with a given delay relative to the others such that the gain of the received signal is highest in a given direction. The receiver also includes a power combination network configured to accept an RF signal from each of the RF front-ends and to pass a combined RF signal to a down-conversion element, where the power distribution network includes a combination of active and passive components. Each RF front-end includes a phase shifter configured to delay the signal in accordance with the given direction and a variable amplifier configured to adjust the gain of the signal.

Phased-array transceiver for millimeter-wave frequencies

The calibration method, performed on a phased array device including channel elements coupled in parallel by a transmission line, has the steps of: obtaining channel responses corresponding to the channel elements through the transmission line, and each of the channel responses is obtained when one of the channel elements is turned on, and the rest of the channel elements are turned off; calculating a characteristic value corresponding to the transmission line based on the obtained channel responses of the channel elements; and adjusting a channel parameter of one of the channel elements based on the characteristic value of the transmission line.

The transceiver has a transmitter, a receiver, and a three-port network. The transmitter is configured to transmit an outgoing RF signal. The receiver is configured to receive an incoming RF signal. The three-port network includes: a transmission line, configured to have a line length less than a quarter of a wavelength of the incoming RF signal; an antenna port, configured to connect to an antenna; a receiver port, configured to connect the receiver to the antenna port; and a transmitter port, configured to connect the transmitter to the antenna port and the receiver port through the transmission line.

Transceiver and method thereof

A phased-array transmitter and receiver that may be effectively implemented on a silicon substrate. The transmitter distributes to front-ends, and the receiver combines signals from front-ends, using a power distribution/combination tree that employs both passive and active elements. By monitoring the power inputs and outputs, a digital control is able to rapidly provide phase and gain correction information to the front-ends. Such a transmitter/receiver includes a plurality of radio frequency (RF) front-ends and a power splitting/combining network that includes active and passive components configured to distribute signals to/from the front-ends.

An input attenuator may include a first input circuit having an RF_IN+ terminal, a first node, a transmission line, a DC blocking capacitor, a second node, a third node, and an output terminal coupled in series, the first node selectively coupled to ground via a serially coupled capacitor and a first silicon germanium heterojunction bipolar transistor, the second node coupled to ground via a capacitor, and the third node selectively coupled to ground via a DC blocking capacitor, a resistor, and a second silicon germanium heterojunction bipolar transistor coupled in series. The input attenuator may also include a second input circuit parallel to the first input circuit and having structure similar to the first input circuit.

Millimeter-wave switches and attenuators

A system-on-chip (SOC) transceiver is provided. The transceiver is configured to operate in excess of 100 GHz and comprising the following components. A quadrature oscillator is configured to generate a fundamental frequency and a second harmonic frequency and comprises at least a pair of high frequency outputs at said second harmonic frequency. At least the second harmonic frequency exceeds 100 GHz. A transmission output is coupled to one of the high frequency outputs for transmitting an output signal at the second harmonic frequency. A transmission signal transformer is coupled to the other one of the high frequency outputs and configured to generate a differential oscillator signal at the second harmonic frequency. A radio frequency input receives radio frequency signals at the transceiver from an antenna. A radio frequency signal transformer coupled to the radio frequency input is configured to generate a differential radio frequency signal at the radio frequency. A mixer is configure to compare the differential radio frequency signal with the differential oscillator signal and output the comparison as an intermediate frequency signal.
