Radiopaque polymers

Radiopaque hydrogels, in particular radiopaque hydrogel microspheres, comprising a polymer having 1,2-dil or 1,3-diol groups acetalized with radiopaque species.

The present disclosure relates to radiopaque PVA polymers where the PVA has a first pendant group and a second pendant group, wherein the first pendant group comprises a first phenyl group bearing 1 to 5 iodine atoms, and the second pendant group comprises either (a) a second phenyl group bearing 1 to 3 substituents selected from the group W and optionally 1 to 4 iodine substituents, the group(s) W and the optional iodines being the sole substituents of the second phenyl group. Each W is selected from &#x2014;OH, &#x2014;COOH, &#x2014;SOH, &#x2014;OPOH, &#x2014;O&#x2014;(Calkyl), &#x2014;O&#x2014;(Calkyl)OH, &#x2014;O&#x2014;(Calkyl)R, &#x2014;O&#x2014;(CHO)R&#x2014;(C&#x2550;O)&#x2014;O&#x2014;Calkyl and &#x2014;O&#x2014;(C&#x2550;O)Calkyl; wherein Ris H or Calkyl; Ris &#x2014;COOH, &#x2014;SOH, or &#x2014;OPOH; q is an integer from 1 to 4; wherein the group W may be in the form of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt; or (b) a pyridyl group; which is optionally in the form of a pyridinium ion.

This invention relates to imageable polymers, particularly those comprising poly vinylalcohol and to methods for making them as well as to embolic microspheres comprising the polymers. The microspheres are imageable during embolization procedures and can be loaded with drugs or other therapeutic agents to provide an imageable drug delivery system.

Imageable polymers

Rehydratable pharmaceutical product

A novel class of polymers obtainable by copolymerising a monomer mixture comprising (i) hydrophilic monomer of general formula (I) Y&#x2014;B&#x2014;X; (ii) styrene or a substituted styrene, a monomer or mixture of monomers which when polymerized form a polymer with a Tg lower than the Tg of a homopolymer of monomer (I) and lower than the Tg of a homopolymer of monomer (ii); and a monomer having a crosslinkable group is described. The invention also relates to a method for producing such polymers, implants coated with the polymers and methods for forming the same.

Polymer

Polymers may be made from zwitterionic monomers having controlled architectures and molecular weights, using living polymerisations such as group or atom transfer radical polymerisation. For instance polymers may be formed by atom transfer radical polymerisation using a copper chloride catalyst, a ligand which is water soluble, and a water soluble tertiary alkyl halide initiator to form homopolymers having controlled polydispersities of less than 1.5 and block copolymers with other hydrophilic or hydrophobic monomers. One suitable zwitterionic monomer is 2-methacryloyloxy-2'-trimethylammoniumethyl phosphate inner salt. The block copolymers may spontaneously form micelles, believed to have zwitterionic, for instance phosphorylcholine, groups at the external surface, which may be useful as drug delivery systems with improved biocompatibility.

The invention additionally provides processes for the production of such an adduct, polymers formed therefrom, coating processes and compositions comprising an adduct or polymers produced therefrom 

Silicon containing compounds

A method in which a mould is coated with a reactive polymer, a liquid curable composition is filled into the mould and cured under conditions such that the reactive polymer becomes covalently bonded to the cured bulk mould material at the interface. The reactive polymer has zwitterionic groups to confer improved biocompatibility on the moulded product. The reactive group on the reactive polymer is conveniently an ethylenically unsaturated group. The curable composition is suitably a radical polymerisable ethylenically unsaturated monomer mixture or a platinum-curable liquid silicone composition.
