Described are the use of glass compositions, for example, in the form of glass powders, glass ceramics, fibers, granules, and spheres for achieving an antioxidative effect. The glass compositions may be used in a versatile manner, such as in cosmetic products, medical products, edibles, paints and lacquers, plasters, cements and concrete, in antifouling products and in polymers. Because of the high photo and temperature stability, the glass antioxidants of the present invention are superior to the organic substances known so far. In addition the glass compositions in contact with human being are non-irritant to skin and even edible. Furthermore, they are toxicologically harmless and environmentally compatible.

Use of glass compositions for achieving an antioxidative effect

The present invention involves new cosmetic, personal care, cleaning agent, biocidal agent, functional food, and nutritional supplement compositions. These new compositions incorporate bioactive glass into cosmetics, personal care items, cleaning agents, biocidal agents, functional foods, and nutritional supplements. The present invention also involves methods of making and methods of using such compositions.

Cosmetic, personal care, cleaning agent, and nutritional supplement compositions and methods of making and using same

The method of preserving a perishable cosmetic and/or pharmaceutical preparation includes adding bioactive glass particles to the preparation, preferably in amounts up to 10 percent by weight. The bioactive glass particles preferably have particle sizes (d) less than or equal to 10 &#x3bc;m and contain from 40 to 60 wt. % SiO, 10 to 30 wt. % CaO, 10 to 35 wt. % NaO, 2 to 8 wt. % PO, 0 to 25 wt. % CaF, 0 to 10 wt. % BO, 0 to 8 wt. % KO and/or 0 to 5 wt. % MgO. A liquid cosmetic preparation with alcohol content insufficient for preservation is preserved in an inconspicuous manner by adding bioactive glass particles with particle sizes less than or equal to 10 &#x3bc;m and with a refractive index close enough to that of the liquid cosmetic preparation so that bioactive glass particles are substantially invisible to an observer.

Preservatives for perishable preparations, in particular for cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations

Abrasive compositions which include bioactive materials, such as bioactive glass and bioactive ceramics, which provide biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant effects, improved wound healing, and/or other beneficial effects are provided. Also provided are abrasive compositions comprising relatively non-toxic, bioinert glasses and ceramics which provide good abrasive effects, reduce or eliminate potentially harmful small particles; reduce or eliminate clogging of dermabrasion equipment; possess a relatively large surface area for applying coatings; and may be inexpensive and simple to make. Methods for abrading human or animal tissue, such as human skin, by contacting such tissue with these abrasive compositions is also provided.

Tissue abrasives

The dental filling material for a permanent dental filling contains up to 87 percent by weight of a mixture of bioactive glass particles capable of forming a hydroxylapatite layer and conventional non-bioactive dental glass particles surrounded or embedded in a matrix material. The glass particles have an average particle size (d) less than 50 &#x3bc;m. When the index of refraction of the glass particles at least approximately matches the index of refraction of the matrix material a particularly attractive appearance results when the resulting filling material is used to make a dental filling. When the bioactive glass particles contain fluoride, protection against further caries is provided. The invention also includes a method of making the dental filling material, the dental filling made with it and a binder for binding the dental filling to a tooth.

Use of bioactive glass in dental filling material

Compositions and methods for treating wounds to significantly reduce the healing time, reduce the incidence of scar formation, improve the success of skin grafts, reduce the inflammatory response and providing anti-bacterial treatments to a patient in need thereof, that include small non-interlinked particles of bioactive glass or highly porous bioactive glass, are disclosed. Anti-bacterial solutions derived from bioactive glass, and methods of preparation and use thereof, are also disclosed. The compositions include non-interlinked particles of bioactive glass, alone or in combination with anti-bacterial agents and/or anti-inflammatory agents. The compositions can include an appropriate carrier for topical administration. Anti-bacterial properties can be imparted to implanted materials, such as prosthetic implants, sutures, stents, screws, plates, tubes, and the like, by incorporating small bioactive glass particles or porous bioactive glass into or onto the implanted materials. Anti-bacterial properties can also be imparted to devices used for in vitro and ex vivo cell culture by incorporating non-interlinked particles of bioactive glass into the devices. Anti-bacterial compositions derived from aqueous extracts of bioactive glass are also disclosed. These compositions can be used, for example, in food preparation, solutions used for cell culture, and buffer solutions, such as i.v. solutions.

Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial uses for bioactive glass compositions

Compositions and methods for systemically minimizing the inflammatory effects of TNF-&agr; are disclosed. The compositions include particles of bioactive glass with a particle size less than about 20 &mgr;m, alone or in combination with anti-inflammatory agents and other therapeutic agents. The compositions can include an appropriate carrier for oral, intramuscular, intraperitoneal or intravenous administration. When administered to a patient, the particles bring about elevated levels of IL-6 and do not cause elevated levels of TNF-&agr;.

Anti-inflammatory bioactive glass particulates

A non-toxic cleaning agent with biocidal and dirt-removing properties, which is used together with a solvent, contains at least one surface-active agent and phosphorus-containing bioactive glass particles. The glass particles preferably release at least 300 &mgr;g of alkali metal ions per gram, have an average size of less than 400 &mgr;m and contain SiO , CaO, Na O, CaF , B O , K O and/or MgO, as well as P O . These cleaning agents are particularly well suited for cleaning surfaces and textile materials, for use in dishwashing detergents and particularly in medical and food-serving establishments.

Non-toxic, microbicidal cleaning agent containing bioactive glass particles

This invention relates to a method for treating inflammatory symptoms such as burning, redness, itching, swelling and pain which accompany skin disorders other than wounds of the skin. The method comprising topical application of a topical medicinal composition comprising a non-interlinked, particulate bioactive glass mixed with a topical medicinal carrier to the site of the skin disorder.
